I can now see this crane (depending on which way its oriented) when looking west from my building. Since Im almost directly west of lancaster square I can't see the 3601 crane from this angle.

Lived at 38th & Lancaster 5yrs ago, and this stretch of 38th street was the worst to walk home from. It is so very different now. Wow.

Both 3601 Market and this crane are not at their final heights. You should be able to see them more clearly when they are jumped up.

Seriously. The change in this stretch is phenomenal over the past few years and it continues to change drastically.

You can really say that the center city vibe extends from front to 40th along market now. That will really be true if they ever develop that parking lot west of 38th across from the new 11 story building that penn is leasing. A few years back you would say 36th street was sort of the end of the "downtown" vibe along market.

I updated a few projects yesterday including this one, now on the 6th floor, on the building philly facebook page. I think we've finally reached that height where it'll start shooting up much faster now.

Assuming the intended audience for the building is Penn students, one would hope they won't build any.

I agree its not necessary but considering the parking included at 3601 I was surprised no parking is on this site. I didnt really think either building needed dedicated parking.

Apparently, it's aimed at a more diverse audience than just Penn students, or even students in general:

The new tower will appeal to University City Science Center workers as well, as Drexel and Penn Students and Center City workers.

From everything I've read about this, my impression has always been that it's intended to be a general-purpose apartment building, and not specialized student housing (unlike, e.g., Evo, Lancaster Square, etc.).

Interesting, I just assumed based on the proximity. Not sure why anyone not a student would want to live that close to the university personally, but different strokes and all that...

Guess you wouldn't be a big fan of these places:

http://www.domuspa.com/

http://www.leftbankapts.com/

Relatively high-end apartments--not targeted specifically at students--have done quite well in that neighborhood over the past decade or so. And neighborhoods around urban universities in other cities--e.g., NYU, Columbia, Harvard, etc.--also have proven to be attractive to non-students.

Interesting, was not aware of those.

I guess personally, although I had a wonderful time at Penn as a student, I have since lost my tolerance for being in the presence of college students.

That said, last year a job offer sent me to Cambridge, MA, so that might also suggest I am a masochist.

Have you hung out in University City lately? It's becoming much more diverse and interesting than it used to be--as are, arguably, Penn students. And I can say that because I also was a student at Penn back in the day.

There's definitely a growing symbiosis between the vibes and lifestyles of University City and Center City, as they continue to physically knit themselves together (thanks to the ongoing efforts of Penn, Drexel, CHOP, and the Science Center).
