everyone has anecdotes. Ive never seen a homeless person attack or go after a "regular" person. Ever. You have the clearly mentally ill homeless who don't even ask for money and wander the streets- unsightly and sad but not dangerous. Most of the folks who ask for money just sit with signs or hold up cups asking for change. I'm not sure what they do in other cities, but I don't call this unduly "aggressive". To be frank, anyone homeless that is overly loud or aggressive is clearly mentally ill and I have a hard time believing such people don't exist in other american cities.
You've been very lucky and fortunate you haven't had any incidents. I can't say the same - not even close, same goes for all my counterparts. I'd be happy to provide many many detailed stories offline if there is a desire to know - which I think some have their heads in the sand. Hell I think there was even a telemundo reporter that was attacked by city hall on live television not too long ago.
