4 Midtown cranes

With 2 cranes being assembled for 77 12th Street, there will be 4 cranes between Peachtreet St, the connector, 10th St, and 12th St. Impressive.

That is great. I was just talking with a friend over beers the other day about how nice it was to see the two current ones there. Four will be a very welcome site after such a dearth of intown construction projects in recent years.

I've been pretty excited/relieved about all the new projects, from street car, to Ponce City, to the cranes along Tenth and Twelfth. Then I spent a weekend in D.C. and a weekend in Chicago and both of those cities are covered in cranes and acting like the recession never happened. I'm still happy about the recent progress, but we still have a long way to go.

Are these ever going to happen? What is up with Dewberry?

All three of those are complete trash. Suburban high rises that look like the trash in Buckhead. I had friends come into town this weekend and I must say that I am embarrassed every time I take people to Buckhead. The infrastructure and street life there is pathetic. The area always fails to live up to its expectations with my visitors.

I agreed, but our rents here (even in our Class A buildings) are so low that they don't justify the higher quality design and materials seen in higher tier cities. Until rents increase you're going to see more of the same under the best of circumstances.

i think he's bemoaning the fact that there's no street level interaction with any of those high rises— no retail, restaurants, anything to engage the structure with the street. these buildings are just more barricades that detract from the walkability of the area.

This one looks like it has something at street level...

Anyway, so we really expect anything great from Dewberry?

A huge win for sure--almost as good as the Caterpillar announcement. 2012 has definitely been a great year so far for corporate and manufacturing announcements.

The development is kind of intriguing. It is a planned mixed use development with a town center area. As of now there is basically nothing--I think they tried to get it going around 2008 which was horrible timing obviously. They definitely managed to find out a way to raise the profile of the development.

The master plan is here:

http://www.stantonsprings.com/files/...dUse_Large.pdf

Suburbs having a mixed-use town center area is definitely an improvement over the previous model.

Avalon project gets the OK to move forward

Alpharetta City Council gave the go-ahead April 23 for Avalon, the $600-million mixed-use project at Georgia 400 and Old Milton Parkway.

North American has already landed Whole Foods Market and Regal Cinemas to help anchor the project. North American plans to include about 559,000 square feet of retail; a 300-room, full-service hotel; a 175-room, boutique hotel; a 350,000-square-foot, 14-story office building that will be developed, leased, owned and managed by Greenstone Properties.

North American will also develop 250 luxury apartments with an average rent of $1,400. Monte Hewett Homes will build 132 townhomes and single-family homes.

Crum & Forster building Facing Wrecking Ball

The application filed by the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc., which purchased the building in 2007 to expand nearby Technology Square, is for a permit to demolish approximately two-thirds of the building.

Georgia Tech has said that it would like to build a High Performing Computing Center, a potential 24-story, 680,000 square foot public-private development, on the block. The Crum & Forster facade and possibly the entire front portion of the building could be preserved.
