Nice! Valparaiso is a beautiful city. Love the setting, the densely packed buildings and hills, the architecture, the grit, etc, it definitely looks like an atmospheric place. Kind of reminds me of SF

What a glorious, memory-awaking tour! Love, love the murals, the painted steps, and how I love hilly cities. The Latino's are so good at erecting any kind of structure on hilly areas, precariously sitting there. I recall the narrow wedgy buildings squeezed in here and there, and the trams.

I was there in 2007, doing my non-Santiago, Chile trip. Wasn't much impressed with its neighbor Vina Del Mar.

thanks fellas. haha yeah, lots of hotels there, but it seemed like vina del mar is for conventioneers. i went over there to rent a car, but changed my mind, so i don't have much to say about it.

more valparaiso info:

per wiki its 155 sq.mi. today and the population was 284,630 in 2012 (metro 930,220), 6th largest in chile.

valparaiso thrived as a major port city in the 1800's. it had latin america's first stock exchange and first fire department. it still has the oldest spanish language newspaper in the world, el mercurio. it seriously declined after the panama canal opened and was abandoned by the rich.

however it's long stagnation has paid off leaving a unique look and heritage. it was declared a world heritage site in 2003 and in the last 20yrs it fortunes are returning via tourism and via its local major colleges and universities.

a transit quirk is that the valpo trollybus system they use only began in 1952, which is curious because that was around the era when america got rid of them over here. whats cool is that many of the original trolleybuses are still in use. they also have a nice new lightrail line as well as mini busses, regular city busses and very comfortable inter-city busses.

its really a breathtaking place, in more ways than one given all the hills and steps (!). i highly recommend visiting if you can. if you don't want to constantly deal with the hills of the old city you can stay in vina del mar, the touristic beach hotel town next door, which is flat. however, if you want to really explore and can handle the epic hilliness by all means stay in town.

valpo aint all old though, there is plenty of new construction as well as rehabbed new, modern interiors behind old fronts -- the renovation efforts are very impressive.

our hotel and something like this pic are examples:

http://www.casagalos.cl/index.php?lang=en

so thats all for colorful valparaiso -- but more chile to come.

I've run into way too many American travelers, who first head to Europe for their foreign travel, then after that, they may head to Asia, and South America seems to the last on their lists.

I believe one of the reasons for that is Americans are more catered to in Asia/Europe, more bilingual people, more people speaking English, and in South America you're not catered to like that.

This place looks gorgeous, thanks for all these fantastic pics. This is going to sound weird, but it reminds me of a nicer, brighter Vladivostok.

Is Valparaiso especially dry? I'm curious why so many houses have corrugated sheet metal roofs.

dry, and the corregated "products" (some may be transite/asbestos!) are cheap. the buildings may have been wood siding and perhaps tile roofs originally. the european style buildings covered in corregated product are interesting.

i'm loving this! i'd love to go from here up the altiplano

Yup. But CA's mediterranean climate stretches all the way up into Nor Cal. In fact, Valparaiso's flavor of mediterranean climate is the same as SF's (mostly warm-summer mediterranean), and they have very similar temperature ranges. More so than Valparaiso and So Cal (which mostly has a hot-summer mediterranean climate), though the amount of rainfall Valparaiso gets is more similar to LA than SF.

preparing for the trip i read that the valpo climate is said to be between that of sf and santa barbara. we had a space heater on at night in the hotel (remember its winter down there now). it was quite pleasant day and night, much like cali is.

^ i'll say! definately a quirky, eye-catching structure. i saw that there were a lot of shabby older fronted buildings that were totally modernized inside. in the main tourist areas of cerro alegre and cerro concepcion at least. maybe they have to do that because its a world heritage site designation? i dk. thats probably not one of them though lol!

Legit thread. I can see both much of goodness and some obnoxious trolling attitude in your pictures.

Reminds me of a couple of Chilean students I knew here. They were just like your thread.
Most often friendly, though sometimes trolling. Lol

Bon, attends... Voilà qui va clarifier la chose.

When someone makes up the building you live in like this, you'll understand what "trolling" means here.

I'm not talking about worthy murals, but this .... is just useless.

But I guess you're a too great individual for me to speak to. Pardon me.
Read this worthless comment of mine. This is my very last one to you.
