Has there ever been a properly "mothballed" building in Buffalo?
Do they even know how to go about doing that?
Likely No. And No.
Sounds like the key is making sure the roof is whole and draining all the pipes of water. Oh, and keeping the vagrants and metal/architectural detail thiefs out.

Actually the answer is yes. There is a mansion on Delaware that had a devastating fire. All the sections that were too weak were demolished leaving just three walls standing which were properly braced as saved for restoration. A new building has been built within the walls and now you cannot tell anything ever happened. Also up the street the old University club sat empty for years with its windows boarded. The wood coverings were painted a dark green and the building was generally maintained. Paladino put high end apartments in there a few years ago. I would suggest that the Central Terminal is another case of a building being properly mothballed. Of course this did not happen until after a lot of damage was done.
Boy it was good to be back in the Buff! I really soaked in the city during my five days there (saw my first commercial for Airport Plaza Jewelers (and their dink building) in years, and I'm not sure why but I absolutely positively loved it). I also took about eleventy million pictures, so look for photo threads in the near future.
But for now, here's the construction shots. Most pics date to Dec 30th, with a few from January 2nd.

Thanks for the photos kznyc! What material is that on the courthouse exterior? Concrete panels?
something like that, but glass is going to go over the whole surface of the building. should be starting shortly. here are some construction and rendering photos

Kissling's Allentown Lofts project is done- 6 of the 10 units are leased and tenants start moving in next week. If you're in Buffalo, they're having an open house the next three Saturday/Sundays from 10-2. I've seen most of the downtown housing projects and this one has some of the biggest units and best finishes. First class job (and rents to prove it).
Former main entrance is now part of one of the two-level units.
Is anyone curious about what the money in the HSR bill for "station improvements in Buffalo and Rochester" is all about?
