The beaches in the central area of the city are La Perla, Bristol, Varese and Playa Grande. It is between Varese and Plaza Grande that we find San Martin Park, the most beautiful in my opinion...

Playa Grande and the port from San Martín Park (very early in the morning)

COLD, like most of the south atlantic. Even in Rio Grande do Sul, which is north of Uruguay, the water is still cold most of the year.

it only starts getting "tropical warm" around Rio de Janeiro and to the north.

Great thread about Mar del Plata! Its a beautiful city indeed!

Totu, whats the population of Mar del Plata in the summer and in the rest of the year? How many of those apartment buildings get unused in the rest of the year? Is it a main summer resort or is it more of an autonomous city that happens to have a beach? (like Santos, near São Paulo, as an example)

If its a main resort destination, I take its mostly people from Buenos Aires that go there? What about argies from Rosario, Cordoba, etc?

Hi, Trantor!

The population that lives in Mar del Plata the complete year is aproximately 600,000 ha and the city has a real development as an autonomous center.
But recieves more than 3,000,000 milion tourists each year, not only from Buenos Aires, but specially from all the country. Mar del Plata is not near Buenos Aires. We have to make 400 kms!! So as you said, a lot of apartments remains closed during winter. Despite of this, a lot of 'porteños' go there in winter for weekends.

Do you live in Sao Paulo? Why don't you open a thead of Santos here? I would like to see pics of that place!
