^NYC used pre-WWII subway cars right up to the 90s, painted a characteristic red. You still see them sometimes doing garbage runs and maintenance work at night. Anyway, many of them were sunk offshore for reefs to grow on, and I take it this painting is when one has just hit the water, right before it fills up and sinks.

great painting, by the way.
