Good article, thanks for posting. Always enjoy reading the stuff ULI puts out.

Encouraging to see, though I (and I trust everyone else here) would have really liked to see greater progress along both sides of the Allegheny River by now. It's been very slow.

I would argue that if the Riverfront 47/Brilliant RR Bridge plans were able to truly commence, it would really help get things moving, spurring action on the south bank between Highland Park to Lawrenceville. A stupid and stubborn group of Aspinwall NIMBYs have been a thorn in the side of beneficial progress though. Sharpsburg, Shaler, Etna, Millvale, and PennDOT are pretty much ready to go with it.

The Cultural Trust got state funding to demo the Duff's building:

Not exactly a looker.

Supposedly this will clear the way for additional development (was this part of the second phase of the new garage-and-more development?)

I don't know how this works. Since it's a project by the Cultural Trust, will the development also be classified as non-profit?

I noticed signs last night on a vacant storefront on Liberty Avenue, which said that it would be the new location of Pizza Parma.

So maybe that business is preparing to vacate the building on the corner of Penn and Ninth, which is also expected to be demolished to make way for the Cultural Trust redevelopment.

If I recall correctly, the entire Penn Avenue block between 8th and 9th, including that unattractive parking garage, is expected to be demolished to make way for the new construction.

Yeah. If you remember the HRC presentation from a few weeks back, it was clear that the second phase (oddly called Phase IV, IIRC) will involve a third tower which faces Fort Duquense Boulevard.

In the same HRC presentation, the developers proposed several ways to retain those two structures, including a facadectomy and retaining the first 20 feet in the front of the structures. Since they're part of the Penn-Liberty historic district, the HRC is going to have to sign off on whatever they do.

After another long ganja break, the zoning board has posted the agenda for another meeting publicly: the one tomorrow. Items of note.

1. The attempt to expand an existing old apartment building on the 600 block of Cedar Avenue from 20 to 27 units was continued from back in October. Obviously it met with some NIMBY opposition.

2. Infill house in Duquense Heights.

3. Infill house in Bloomfield.

4. Some sort of restaurant expansion in the building in Lawrenceville now housing Round Corner Cantina and that Japanese restaurant upstairs.

I have to wonder if perhaps this could be a flight to Seattle.

Wonder if it will be Spirit Airlines. Their CEO did name-drop Seattle during his recent visit to PIT.

Just saw on another forum. It's Alaska Airlines announcing non-stop daily flights to Seattle.

It's on Alaska Airlines but won't start until September 2018. So a very long lead time between this announcement and service commencement.

Alaska has been expanding to the east coast quite a bit and has their main hub at Sea-Tac.

Great news, and certainly does not hurt the city's prospects for landing Amazon....
