the live music as seen in this thread was by matthew dear, dean wareham, britta phillips and chevel sombre aka christopher porpora and the gallery painting was gunther forg.

^ thanks and i am glad you took notice of that one -- it was part of a very unusual event along the highline park called 'the mile long opera.'

they basically closed off the highline for a few nights, had timed admissions, and you walked along the route among hundreds of performers.

there is an amazing website that documented this -- so you can walk it yourself in 360 degrees anytime you want to -- check it out!

I wonder ... will an average household live normally and happily in NYC?

Seems like NYC is only for desperate poor and super rich.

you are confusing lower manhattan with all of nyc.

i agree with you when it comes to lower and midtown manhattan though.

however, they just strengthened rent control rules, so that might keep the middle class that is left in place for awhile longer.

elsewhere, there is affordability to be found and a lot of subsidized housing being built for various stripes of incomes. never enough of course.
