My impression of Mendoza is that she’s pragmatic and has been a competent comptroller. I’ve heard her candidacy characterised as “Rahm’s third term,” which is obviously meant to be a criticism but makes me more comfortable...

I'm scared to ask what the question is.

It's certainly not "Who will be the next mayor?"

She is probably my top choice now for the reason you have outlined.

Umm...

Anyway, I don't really like anyone on the list, with the exception of Mendoza. Preckwinkle is a distant second, and I like Amara Enyia simply to have new blood and new ideas in the mix. Daley, Vallas, Chico, Brown and Wilson can go pound sand. McCarthy is a joke and should be embarrassed he's even running. And DEFINITELYNo.More.Daleys.

Interestingly, Mendoza outperformed Preckwinkle with Chicago voters (and Preckwinkle was unopposed).

Quote:
They show that Mendoza beat Toni Preckwinkle in the County Board president’s home 4th Ward by 734 votes and out-performed Preckwinkle in all of the city’s African-American wards.

That’s even though Preckwinkle was unopposed and Mendoza faced Republican Darlene Senger. Mendoza also beat Preckwinkle’s citywide showing by 22,239 votes.

toni's pop tax debacle really damaged her brand in the eyes of joe six-pack.

i doubt that she'll be the next mayor of chicago.

I like Mendoza and Preckwinkle but what are they going to do to attract money from outside the city. . . they're both local candidates with local reach. . . like Rahm, Daley seems to have a greater resources for keeping Chicago on the national/international stage. . .

Good point - we can probably thank Rahm’s DC connections for getting the red / purple line rebuild funded, along with several other projects I’m not thinking of.

Ever since she announced her candidacy, I did some research on her and I am very impressed. She's a solid public servant who have almost 20 years of experience under her belt and I am impressed by what she and her comptroller department did in the last two years. It is very impressive how she and her team addressed the budget issue hardcore and increased transparency. I think she can definitely build on Rahm's progress by continuing to reduce the deficit and bring her expertise from the comptroller office to the mayor office as a fiscal watchdog. In my opinion, her biggest challenge is to overcome the Daley name recognition. I think she can.
