my understanding is a local developer has partnered with the firm that owns the project in attempts to get it started as now proposed in the new HRM planning notice.

Responding to sdm's comment from almost 4 months ago - a story in the allnovascotia.com confirmed this. The allnovascotia.com states that Halifax developer John Ghosn is a partner with an Ontario firm. They are planning a 75 unit, 13 storey tower plus 17 townhouses and 4500 square feet of commercial space. The building has a value of $15 million dollars. A community council of six HRM councillors (Karsten, McCluskey, Nicholl, Smith, Fisher and Barkhouse) voted unanimously to allow this to proceed to a public hearing likely the first week of May (next month).

The old development agreement will have to be discharged (so the old Sheppard's Island renderings are no longer being considered). However, the site is 25 acres and other buildings will be constructed in the future (there is not a complete conceptual plan at this time).

According to the allnovascotia.com story, John Ghosn stated that construction could begin this year.

Personally, I would have just developed this commercial, maybe put up an office building for companies that would want office space in burnside. I don't see residential doing to well here... I'm not sure of the statistics but I'm pretty sure that most people who work in burnside either make enough to afford a place in Halifax or somewhere better than burnside. And the others don't make enough to afford one here.

jeezus that is ugly. Looks like something out of the 70s.

Especially in the context of the really interesting development that was proposed for the site before (although that one was admittedly over-reaching and too ambitious for that area).

Here's hoping that it looks much better built than it does on paper!

They really are going to do mass, corrigated, metal cladding all over the centre pier? I would have prefered brick at least over that.

This is the first of a few commercial buildings to go up in the area. No word on tenants yet but it appears construction might start soon. There's been excavators on site for awhile now and the promoting sign was just installed this week. Of note is the tower approved last summer is across the Ralston Avenue extension to be built with this building.

This appears to be a current rendering for the residential tower. I think that it should be in this thread(?) However, the development has changed since the thread was started.

According to the Harbour Isle website this is called the Hazelton. They note it as under-construction however as mentioned above there is only one excavator onsite. It has been idle for quite some time.

There is now a large excavator and dump truck onsite. Might just be more land prep or maybe things are finally underway again?

From what I've heard site servicing should start up soon.
