Although modern supermarkets are all over the city, these traditional wet markets continue to survive as a cheaper alternative. I prefer to buy my vegetables and fruits here.

I usually stock up when the packaged noodles go on special at the supermarket. But how about buying fresh noodles by the kilo? This is the traditional noodle shop with plenty of unfamiliar varieties.

The seafood shops are crowded as discounts start flowing through at dinner time.

Stock up on some tea.

Meat is definitely fresh given it is cut straight off there are no fridges anywhere.

Wet markets are targeted at the lower income folks, and are located in the more run-down parts of the city. I peeked around into the traditional mid-rises that line Kowloon's side streets.

For a change of pace, let's head up and away from the bustling streets.

Not everyone needs to pay a fortune to get a beautiful harbour view. These residentials in east Kowloon are mostly public housing and perched on hills where they won't get blocked any time soon.

Kai Tak airport is slowly being redeveloped so this section of skyline will look very different in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the harbour-facing residentials on the Island side will cost you an arm and a leg, yet they face the undesirable north.

Hiking is a popular weekend activity for residents, and some trails are particularly scenic. I went up Jardine's Lookout for a panoramic view of the skyline.

Is Jardine's Lookout the famous vista that all the tourists go to? Or is the famous place someplace else?

It is not a tourist spot. The path up is hidden away from the main tourist areas but the view is still that of the harbour but from a different angle. There is no official observation deck but just a dirt area that opens up to the view, and there are views along the hiking paths as well.

Tuen Mun is a far away suburb built to appease the average poor. Now that there is a rail connection with the city, it doesn't seem too far after all.

This is where the poor live. Older traditional public housing estates are not so tall with lots of space in between wide buildings. They are painted in different light colours to liven up the atmosphere and also to repel the intense summer sun.

Without balconies, residents turn to innovative ways to dry their laundry. Dryers are not common in Hong Kong. We do it the natural way.

Newer estates have a smaller footprint and are much taller.

This estate is built on the side of the hill with ample open space to dry your laundry.

Land reclamation is a contentious topic in Hong Kong, although much of the action now is outside the main harbour area. There is plenty happening next to the airport as new infrastructure is built.

Although a bit far from the city, Tung Chung seems to be a fairly nice and quiet suburb.

Tung Chung was built as a new satellite town to serve the airport, while it is still a reasonable 40 minute commute into the CBD.

There was a fishing village here before all this started.

Nina Tower was originally designed to be the world's tallest building, but had to axe down due to its proximity to the airport. It now comprises 2 towers, 1 of which is a hotel occupying the higher floors.

The area around Tsuen Wan West station and next to Nina Tower has been partially redeveloped into luxury housing.

These were taken in Tsz Wan Shan. From the main road, just go to the backside of the public housing estates that face the hills rising up to Lion Rock / Tate's Cairn.

There isn't one. But there is a skylobby for the hotel's elevator transfer.

Kwun Tong's town centre is being redeveloped and some of the older buildings have already been torn down. This is part of the government's plan to transform the older industrial areas into cheap commercial real estate for companies moving out of Central.

A bit further away, the residential new town of Tseung Kwan O continues to take shape. This is ultra-high density gone on steroids.
