I pretty much agree with everyone else, 1wtc is pretty much ruined from durst and the only things to look forward to are 2wtc and i do like 4wtc, which is hard to mess up. But im much more interested in this site starting cause it has a lot more potential, and looks way cooler imo. But i hope they don't sacrifice quality for speed, but i don't know a lot about using concrete vs. steel, but if anyone knows anything? I do know that most office buildings are going up with steel while residential is using concrete, but thats about it.

Ironworkers bend on wages

By Daniel Massey
May 27, 2012

Quote:

The ironworkers' union—desperate to regain market share from surging nonunion construction, and afraid of missing out on lucrative work at Hudson Yards and the Tappan Zee Bridge—has agreed to an unprecedented wage and benefit rollback. It's already shaking up development in the city.

The unusual decision to amend their existing contracts across the board comes as the ironworkers face the possibility that the Tappan Zee Bridge could be rebuilt without them—with steel fabricated offsite to save the state money—and as the heavyweight real estate developer Related Cos. aggressively seeks cost savings to jump-start its massive Hudson Yards project on the West Side.

Shortly after Local 46 members approved the rollback, Related said it might build luxury-goods maker Coach's new Hudson Yards headquarters with reinforced concrete instead of steel, a rarity for a commercial building in the city. That would create jobs for Local 46 members who bend the steel rods that reinforce concrete. (Other ironworkers locals handle traditional steel construction.) Related declined to comment.

Residential buildings in the city are routinely built with reinforced concrete, as are commercial ones across the country and around the world. It's less expensive than steel, and technology improvements mean quality isn't sacrificed, though controls need to be greater. In New York, where construction methods are entrenched, steel has ruled in commercial buildings. The most significant exception is 505 Fifth Ave., which the Kipp-Stawski Group built using concrete.

Wow this new plan looks so much better than that old plan.

Can't wait for october when construction begins. Hopefully the taller tower gets a tenant by then.

This fight of concrete x steel is complicated... Just wait to see how this project will end up being in the final.

Cant wait for this site to begin construction in addtion to One Hudson Yards, The Girasole, Sherwood Tower, Hudson Yards ER 3, Manhattan West, 514 11th Avenue & all the other Hudson Yards District sites in addition to the future towers built on top of the Javits Center. Truly amazing how many supertalls will be in this small slice of Manhattan in 8 short years.

No. That render is way old, dude. Every final design we've gotten so far has been stellar.

The towers for the Western Yard haven't been deisgned yet, so those buildings to the left are just placeholders. We don't know the height or the design specifics.

In contrast, the buildings on the right (Eastern Yard) are the architectural renderings, so we basically know what to expect.

Right, those towers haven't been designed yet. And we've seen designs for 3 of the 4 towers over the eastern half of the railyards. Still waiting for a good look at that 800 ft residential tower, which will be the second to get underway, being built along with the Coach tower.

Should we be worried about the big tower not finding a tenant? It would be such a shame if that didn't go through.

It sounds like it will eventually though.

It has the most competitive rents appart from One Hudson Yards, it will be occupied sooner rather than later. 2 WTC & 15 Penn are the ones I'm worried about.

Well 2WTC should be built eventually since it's in the WTC complex.

15 Penn may just be redeveloped into a different skyscraper, it is valuable land after all.

Ana Bertuna, vice president of design and construction at Related Companies, said her firm is laying the groundwork for technology that may not yet exist at its Hudon Yards site. Bertuna is overseeing the building of Tower C which will be anchored by the new headquarters for the handbag maker Coach.

At Hudson Yards, multiple towers will sit on a platform built above the rail yards. The space below that platform could become the nerve center for a smarter complex of buildings, she said. “We’re designing infrastructure within the building and platform without knowing what’s going in there,” Bertuna said. “At some point, something is going to interconnect.”

Photo from yesterday & full update, doesn't look like much progress since my last un-photographed visit... I suppose things will pick up in September?
