Lynchburg, VA ........ Don't let the name scare you

I stopped by Lynchburg in October after visiting some relatives in Southwest Virginia. I've been ther before, but had a better camera this time (though no better skills unfortunately ). Lynchburg has a pop ~ 75,000 and a metro of ~ 245,000. It's kind of isolated, but has a good economy, low crime rate, and decent weather. Lots of history too. I walked most of downtown, and for an old fart that wore my a$$ out. Plenty of hills. Here's the pics with no comments:

Nice! I was there this fall and thought it was a really cool city. Even the sharks are happy there.

Very impressive downtown for a city of only 75,000.

Thanks for the pics, Ex-Ithacan!

Lynchburg looks a nice city, I´ve liked it. By the way, its name is good.

Happy New Year and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

What's the history behind the name? I'm curious. Anyone know?

Off the top of my head, I believe it was founded by a John Lynch. (ETA: not Thomas)

See picture 51 for the history.

And granted it's been several years since I was there, but I'm not sure I agree with the description of it as having a good economy. Once upon a time Lynchburg was a peer city to Charlotte and Raleigh. Obviously not anymore.

thanks for the pics. Lynchburg's gorgeous and with its old bones and even Liberty University (as conservative as it is), i'm surprised it hasn't attracted a more, uhm, young conservative/cosmopolitan/bohemian population.

Can't say I've ever seen that combination of words before.

@ Cirrus, Thanks for pointing out the answer to the name question. As far as the economy goes, that's some info I got from wiki, and as everyone knows it's got to be true if it's on the internet.

To all, thanks for the replies.

heck of a show, old timer. i dig 16, and 53 is kinda weird and unexpected. in all my times at shenandoah and passing through roanoke, i don't think i've ever come through lynchburg. looks like a nice little town.

Nice shots, Ex-Ith! It still amazes me how many small cities there are all over the "Appalachian Region" that have pretty well-preserved, active cores and few people even know exist outside of the region!
