Lewistown, PA - Central PA Blue Collar

I went up to State College, PA last week (my Mother had a medical procedure, she's fine now) and I decided to stop by the small city of Lewistown. It's located about 20 miles SE of State College on Route 322 (and a world away). Like many rust belt locales, the city has been in decline for some time. It is the seat of Mifflin County, and has a population of about 8,500. I'd been through Lewistown countless times, but had never explored or taken any pics of it. Well, I have now. Kind of a gritty little rascal in the middle of PA.

Here's some more info:

Here's some pics (probably too many) and I'm going lite on the comments.

Ex-Ithacan, glad to hear your mother is OK. Lewistown has a lot of beautiful buildings and streetscapes. You got some interesting photographs.

The statue in the first pic looks almost identical to one in Wakefield, MA. And by coincidence, I posted a pic of it yesterday in my thread called Back to Boston.

Good pics.

Been there countless times. It's a shame that the steel isn't there anymore like it had been.

Nice pictures. I did a tour of Lewistown a couple years ago and I took more pictures than I thought I would too. There's more interesting Pennsylvania streetscapes then you would think.

Nice photo tour. Lewiston looks like a great town, and very impressive stock of nice old buildings for its size.

Pennsylvania simply does not slack off when it comes to small-city architecture and urbanity. Enjoyable set.

Glad your mother's okay.

And wow @ Helig-Meyers. We used to have those ten years ago...and they turned into Big Lots.

yet another tyrone-sized town with a greater stock of history than tyrone is capable of maintaining. they even have two theaters (to tyrone's none). sigh. i like lewistown, though. their circa-1990s high school was so state of the art that my teammates and i were all jealous of how new everything was. looking back now, it was all charlotte hornets colors and 90210 looking ... i hope it's still like that.

well done tour, old bloke!

exquisite collection of the hub of Mifflin County, Ith. Occupying a fascinating bit of geography there in the mountains... "The Narrows" was always a taxing drive. Gritty, dense, urban... showing a lot of wear... but vital.

^ So true about that pre 4 lane road Eg, it was often a yikes situation too.

Thanks for the replies and kind sentiments fellas.

@ Expat similar statues indeed, btw, love that thread.

@ Flames - did you really pass through this town a lot?

@ Matt - how about a little less time in Lewistown and a little more time in Ithaca?

@ Travis, pope, Tt - thanks guys.

@ pip - maybe I should see about reservations.

@ Chris, thanks, appreciated.

@ gio, unfortunately the Embassy isn't functioning now. And sorry to say that Lewistown and Indian Valley high schools combined to form the Mifflin County High School Huskies (in the previous Lewiston High building).
