Yeah it is under construction now (site preparation).

Ground zero ... for now
2008-2-17

Workers level the ground at the construction site for another skyscraper in Shanghai yesterday. Located in Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai Center is expected to dwarf the 421-meter-tall Jin Mao Tower and the 492-meter-tall Shanghai World Financial Center in its neighborhood. The project has already been approved by the city government, but the detailed plan has yet to be finalized. According to industrial insiders, the new building will be taller than 500 meters.
Why isn't this U/C tower allowed to have its own thread in the construction forums?

They had a short story on the Shanghai Center on the news today. 580m sounds like the final height.

Yeah, this should be moved despite the fact that we don't have a rendering. The site is full of activity.

Since weird newspaper articles claim that SOM still is one of the competitors remaining in the competition (despite them having deleted the project from their website), perhaps Pandemonius can confirm if the SOM entry was 580 meters in height?

Perhaps check Page 3 of this thread?... almost 17 months ago now. Wow, time flies..

Also, This thread should remain in proposals. Site preparation doesn't count as construction. All projects should follow the same guidelines. MO in Chicago had significant site prep a long time ago, with removing of parking, and reworking/installation of utilities, and other equipment brought on site only to now have jack shit happening there. I don't doubt that this tower might move forward, but lets not jump the gun.

Fortunately I saved the text.

Shanghai Center is classic SOM—seamlessly integrating architectural style with engineering solutions and programmatic coordination. The engineering strength of the Shanghai Center exemplifies the way structural design can naturally and intelligently inform the outside shape. There is a deep logic in morphing the tower from its solid commercial base into a more compact shape as it rises into its higher hotel floors.

Project Facts
Completion Year: Ongoing
Site Area: 30,000 m2
Project Area: 433,954 m2

Okay, while no confirmation - it certainly makes it likely that it actually is the SOM proposal that will be built. I'm sure we'll find out very soon.

Possibly a vision for the future to make it taller than Burj...but that probably won't happen.

Shanghai is turning into a 21st century Manhattan. That photo reminds me of a very modern-looking lower Manhattan.

The next two pictures were taken by myself on 9th of april. You can see that the entire constructionsite of Shanghai Center is surrounded by a white/yellow plastered wall. To take the 2nd pic, I had to hold my camera up across the top of the wall. No activity at all on the site at the moment.

someone on ABBS forum released that Gensler has nailed the project!

Congratulations to my friend!
The Tower is about 600M. The regional design director Marshall Strabala just won this project.

It's hard to judge from this rendering.
Is there another view somewhere ?

EDIT : the images that werico posted don't show...

^Thanks !

I like this design a lot, but does it make sense financially ? Those huge atriums behind the transparent skin are very appealing, the "green" features of the tower (gardens in the sky) are another attempt to create the ecological tower, but at what cost ?
