MAKKAH: Future development in the holy city of Makkah will be more in tune with traditional architecture, says Mayor Osama Al-Bar.

The holy city is studded with dozens of yellow and red cranes and metal scaffolding aimed at increasing hotel space and improving facilities to make the annual Haj pilgrimage safer and easier.

As more than 2.5 million Muslims from across the world flood Makkah’s narrow streets for the annual pilgrimage, however, many visitors and residents point to a 600-meter tower surmounted by a huge clock as evidence development has moved too quickly.

“The building regulations in the city take into consideration the width of the streets, central locations and do not allow the building of skyscrapers...what was built was that,” Al-Bar told Reuters when asked about the tower.

Future projects “will be far from the Grand Mosque by 300 meters ... The buildings will have reasonable heights between 8 to 10 floors and will have the Makkah style,” he said.

Within six years, the government hopes to reinforce the infrastructure surrounding Makkah’s Grand Mosque replacing congested narrow roads with new ones, installing footbridges for pedestrians and a four-line metro.

On Tuesday, Crown Prince Naif said the development that had already taken place would “be little compared to what will happen.”

“We want to evolve Makkah, not change it,” said Sami Angawi, founder of Haj Research Center and an expert on Makkah.

“I love Makkah and cannot see the beloved (sanctuary) of the Prophet being handled this way,” said Angawi, who shares a belief with many Muslims that Makkah is a holy place where change must be made in a delicate manner.

Deadly stampedes, tent fires and other accidents have several times caused hundreds of deaths, forcing the government to spend lavishly on new infrastructure.

“For sure (the expansion) will be good for pilgrims because usually there are huge numbers of pilgrims, especially during prayer times,” Ahdab Seif, an Egyptian pilgrim, said outside the Grand Mosque.

“Makkah is known to be an old city ... it has some old haphazard buildings located near the Grand Mosque and this project will reshape the face of Makkah and raise the capacity and services of the city,” Al-Bar said.

“By 2020 we hope that results will be visible as major parts of the projects will be complete,” he said.

Among the announced projects, which will cost more than $30 billion, is a historic expansion of the Grand Mosque to add 400,000 square meters and add shaded areas to shelter worshippers from the scorching desert sun.

A sq foot of land around the Grand Mosque has in some cases reached up to $18,000, Al-Bar said, significantly higher than average prices of around $4,420 in Monaco.

Property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle could not corroborate those prices but confirmed that the land around the Grand Mosque is the most expensive real estate in the world.

tawaf is one of the islamic rituals of pilgrimage. During the hajj and umrah, muslims are to circumambulate the kaaba seven times, in a counterclockwise direction. The circling is believed to demonstrate the unity of the believers in the worship of the one god, as they move in harmony together around the kaaba, while supplicating to allah.

World’s largest crescent stands aloft on top of a huge clock

MAKKAH: The largest golden crescent in the world stands aloft in the sky over the Grand Mosque on the top of a huge clock.

Its height is more than half a kilometer above the ground, raising its arms into space to embrace the sky. The crescent sits on the second tallest tower in the world, weighing about 35 tons, and its construction took three months.

The crescent is 22 meters long and 24 meters wide, and has a diameter of 23 meters.

The tower supporting the crescent is divided into 10 parts and contains the highest residence quarters in the world in its middle. It is the main component of the complex that includes seven towers and is being developed as part of the King Abdul Aziz endowment project for the Two Holy Mosques.

The crescent is so huge that it includes room for housing, employment, service and maintenance, as well as six lifts to transport visitors to the surrounding balcony below the four clocks.

The crescent emanates rays of white light up into the sky from 21,000 light bulbs that can be seen from a distance of up to 30 km.

The base of the crescent is decorated with the word “Allah-hu Akbar” (God is the greatest) that can be seen from a great distance.

Breathtaking photos. The tower itself is an instant icon and a marvel to look at.

Everything below the spire is an utter trainwreck. Clearly, the people that designed this do not have experience with this size of building. The details would work fine in a 3-10 story building, but add an extra zero and the proportions become all wrong.

The materials used in the tower don't help. It looks like painted concrete, which is a poor contrast to the polished stone used in the base.

I actually agree with you. It looks like the building is in the process of being decapitated.

I am not a big fan of the building - although it looks good in some angles. I am sure they have really used some good materials - I would have liked to seen it designed slightly differently - the top half looks fine - but should have been taller to look better proportioned imo. I would like to see the building from the front looking down showing its glorious height - that would be nice! This is a building that will grow on people in time - just like the WTC did for New Yorkers in the 1970's. I hope the surrounding construction when completed will complement the building. I am sure the local authorities are planning other buildings that will be more desirable. Remember Saudi Arabia has some of the best looking Skyscrapers in the world - two in Riyadh! The World’s Tallest building planned for construction in a few weeks is definitely a better looking skyscraper when completed. In time I think Abraj Al-Bait will be one of the top ten buildings in the world

I like the clock tower, as well as the tents on top of the smaller towers, but overall I think this building is an abomination. I'll admit, though, that I'd like to see it in person because of it's combination of height and mass. Oh wait, that's right, I'm not allowed to see it in person
