Kozhikode airport to get a new terminal

Thiruvananthapuram: A world-class terminal will be commissioned at the Kozhikode airport in March, a senior official said.
Airport officiating director V S P Chinson said 95% of the civil work has been completed and the terminal was fast nearing completion. A high-power committee from the Airport Authority of India visited the airport in the northern Kerala city last week to review progress of the Rs900mn project.
In the initial stage, only three aerobridges will be commissioned followed by two more. At least 1,000 passengers would be able to use the terminal at a time against the present capacity of 300.
Three conveyor belts of 60m will be added to the new international terminal. The number of checking counters at the domestic terminal will be increased from five to 11 and from 10 to 28 at the international terminal.

THIS IS REALLY INTERESTING...

YOUNGEST WEB DESIGNER OF THE WORLD

Posted by hindumommy under Kerala , Education

When children of her age are glued to the TV, eight-year-old Sreelakshmi Suresh is busy exploring web designing.

The fourth standard student of Presentation High Secondary School in Kozhikode, Kerala, has proved her mettle by designing her school website, to be launched on January 15, 2007.

The Association of American Webmasters has honoured her with its official membership, a rare honour for a girl so young.

Daughter of Suresh Menon, an advocate and Viju Suresh, a schoolteacher, Sreelakshmi’s brush with the digital world began at the age of four.Initially, a little prodding was needed. But once she took off it was a flight to the glory. “After studies I used to spend hours before the terminal. Since my school did not have an official site, I took it as a challenge to design one,” explains Sreelakshmi.

For students of her school, she is a role model.

“She is an inspiration for even grown up students… our school is blessed with such a talented girl,” school headmistress Sister Roselit praises her.

Parking lots only in proposals
Monday March 12 2007 10:50 IST
KOZHIKODE: Is the city turning unfriendly to four-wheelers? For those who venture out here on their cars, parking is a nightmarish experience.

Though efforts are on to develop the roads, the Corporation seems to have ignored the need for parking space in the city. It is to be seen whether the coming Corporation budget will seriously address this issue.

Parking has always remained a major problem in city with population of vehicles shooting up. However, proposals to construct parking lots always remained on papers.
It was seven years ago that proposal was made to construct an open auditorium-cum-parking space near Mananchira, where district education office is located. The Corporation last year submitted a memorandum to Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan for reviving the project seeking permission to construct an auditorium on the lines of Nisagandhi auditorium in state capital, with an underground parking facility.

KOZHIKODE: The 2007-08 State BSaturday March 10 2007 11:55 IST
KOZHIKODE: The 2007-08 State Budget presented by Finance Minister Thomas Isaac has evoked mixed response from the trading community in city.

Like in the previous years, the budget was flayed for its ‘neglect of Malabar’, and the inadequacy of funds earmarked for the few ‘namesake’ development initiatives. But it was hailed for new exemptions under luxury tax, huge amounts earmarked for welfare projects and trader-friendly collection of tax arrears.

The budget is silent on the special consideration assured for Kozhikode while the new IT policy was formulated,” said Malabar Chamber of Commerce president P Sakeer. The total amount of Rs. 10 crore earmarked for IT parks outside Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram would be inadequate, he added.

Expressing concern over the increasing revenue deficit, the Chamber president also criticised the FM for not earmarking adequate amount for the development of Beypore Port. He, however, lauded welfare programmes in various sectors including agriculture and tourism besides the initiatives in drinking water projects.

Citing the drawbacks of the Malabar Shopping Festival held in Kozhikode in January-December, Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry secretary P T S Unni urged the Finance Minister to ensure the support of traders before organising the Rs.15 crore Kerala Shopping Festival.

“Kozhikode appears to have been ignored considering the development proposals for Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram,” he added.

Welcoming the allotment of Rs.1 crore for road development in city and other projects in Malabar including proposed medical lab in Kannur, Unni said the budget was trader-friendly for its simplified proposals for collection of tax arrears.

Holding it to be a balanced budget, Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi state president T Nazirudeen said the sales tax’s entry with one percent tax in the textiles sector would create problems ‘in this sector where Kerala employs maximum people’.

The city-based Tax Payers Association welcomed the institution of awards for tax payers and the proposal to conduct adalats for collection of tax dues

Very true.

There should be fair share approach. The city which generate more tax revenue for
state govt must get proportionally high funding. This will help to channel the money whereever
it is worth spending. Kozhikode can get a big share as it generates a good proportion of state tax revenue.

You mean Reliance has taken up space here ? Or are they building it ? If latter it would
be exciting for Calicut.

Reliance retail operations in the state are based in Kochi, but I don't know the location.
I don't think their HQ building looks as grand as the above one.

Steps progressing for expansion of Kozhikode airport
Thursday March 15 2007 10:56 IST
PTI

T’PURAM: Steps are on for the expansion and modernisation of the Kozhikode international airport, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told the State Assembly on Wednesday.

The National airport authority of India has asked for 162 acres of land adjacent to the existing airport for carrying out various expansion projects including construction of terminal, runway and flight maintenance unit, Achuthanandan said while replying to a submission.

The authority wanted the state government to hand over the land free of cost and the government has not taken a final decision on the matter, he said.

Discussion with authorities concerned and finance department was progressing, he added.

Kshitji to build shopping mall at kozhikode & kochi

"Kshitij Venture Capital Fund with its joint venture partners, Mr Atul Ruia and Sharyans Resources, is planning to develop a two million sq ft mall there in another two to three years. It will be a retail-lead mixed-use development. It may also have a hotel," Mr Agarwal said.

Asked whether Pantaloon proposes to occupy the retail space in the proposed mall, he said, "Nothing has been finalised on that front as yet."

Kshitij Investment Advisory Co Ltd (formerly known as PFH Investment Advisory), is planning to set up 51 malls across the country, spanning 14.5 million sq ft.

Also on the cards is the floating of a specialised mall management company, for which Kshitij Investment Advisory Co is reported to be in talks with a few international players in mall management for a partnership deal. Branded Kshitij Retail Destinations, these malls would come up not only in the four metros and Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune, but also in tier-II towns such as Coimbatore, Madurai, Vijaywada, Rajahmundry, Kozhikode, Kochi and Hubli.

The Government had reportedly asked the DMRC to verify whether short-distance trains could be operated in the Kozhikode- Thrissur and Ernakulam-Thrissur sectors too.
