I woke up and I was in VENICE

Two months ago I was in Venice to attend the opening of the architecture biennale. It was my first time. I expected a theme park and found an actual city where it was surprisingly easy to escape from the tourist hordes. I was there for work so I didn't have a ton of time, but I did come away with a few photos.

And just for fun, some Instagram shots:

Nice shots. Brings back fond memories of my 2007 Venice Trip (chronicled somewhere in the back annals of SSP). Looks less crowded than when I was there.

Great shots. I was amazed at the sheer size of Venice when I visited. From the train station, it's well over a mile to Piazza S. Marco and the city continues another mile or so beyond that.

The scale of the city is so fine-grained that it feels even larger than that. Especially when all the shops close and there are no more landmarks to help you find your way, the city seems vast indeed.

Yes, it's not a small place. It takes an hour to walk from one side to the other, and of course there's the Lido and outlying islands beyond that. It's a complete universe. Once you're in Venice you don't feel much pressure to leave.

Great shots as usual. I love Venice, I don't care what anybody says about the hordes of tourists!

Wonderful - I don't think there's any form of transport that enhances a city more than water.

Beautiful thread, it's one of those magical places the world has to offer. And it's nice to see some aspects of everyday life too.

Very, very nice.

I should consult a Venetian for advice on keeping water from seeping into my basement.
