2480 Walkley Rd [Giant Tiger HQ] | 21.5m | 4f | Completed

The proposal involves a multi-phase reconstruction project to accommodate the redevelopment of the existing Giant Tiger corporate headquarters to a proposed four-storey, approximately 20,255m2 building within the currently undeveloped eastern portion of the subject property. The new building will contain approximately 17,380m2 of office floor area within the main four storey massing, together with approximately 2,875m2 of retail within an attached one-storey podium. The overall design intent is to create a prominent, contemporary building with a signature corporate aesthetic.

The massing of the proposed replacement building will consist of two, four-storey staggered blocks joined by a central glass atrium, as well as a one-storey block positioned closer to the street. The retail store will occupy the front portion of the building, and the office will occupy the bulk of the building to the rear. The proposed office component is nearly 2.5 times greater in size than the existing corporate office and has been designed to accommodate up to approximately 700 full-time employees.

A far cry from what they have now, a HQ that looks like a warehouse. Speaking of warehouse, I thought they'd moved it to Brockville (or Prescott?) a few years ago? This one is still in use?

Nice! Great to see another Ottawa-based company expanding and investing in the region (in terms of HQ and jobs).

And yes, I believe they did open a new high-tech warehouse in Prescott. It says that part is outside of the "limits of application". So perhaps they will be selling or renting out the old space?

If it was downtown, I might say "what else is new". On Walkley, it will be hands down the best building in the area.

Given that Farm Boy is located right next door and growing fast I can see there being demand for facilities in that area

That says more about the low expectations than about the architecture.

As someone who drives past it every day, I can tell you it will definitely be a welcome change. Right now all that is on this stretch of Walkley are warehouses and 70s era low rise office buildings. This is a HUGE improvement

That's not entirely false. When I see a new Claridge proposal, I think "hey, better than Claridge Plaza!" Then I post it on the Canada thread, and everybody used to better architecture pukes.

Giant Tiger plans new four-storey Ottawa HQ on Walkley Road

By: OBJ staff
Published: May 13, 2019 11:33am EDT

Giant Tiger may soon have a larger den to call home, as the Ottawa-based discount retail chain has filed plans with the city to expand its existing corporate headquarters on Walkley Road.
Giant Tiger HQA rendering of Giant Tiger's proposed new corporate headquarters on Walkley Road.

Last week planning committee approved Giant Tiger’s proposal for a new four-storey office building and one-storey retail-use podium at 2480 Walkley Rd. The site is currently occupied by 371,570-square-feet of building space containing both the company’s corporate headquarters and a retail store, but most of the facility is taken up by a warehouse that formerly housed a Giant Tiger distribution centre.

The multi-phased development would see much of the existing structure maintained as an ancillary store connected to the new corporate building, which will contain roughly 187,000 square feet of office space. A portion of the warehouse will be demolished for construction staging purposes, but additional work will see 182,685 square feet of industrial space maintained for lease to future tenants.

Planning committee is recommending council approve a zoning bylaw amendment to allow the ancillary retail use on the site and raise the existing height limits from 18 metres to 22 metres.

I think they need a new logo, something that doesn't look like a cartoon from the 80's.

I actually kind of like this proposal. There's certainly nothing spectacular about it (after all, GT isn't an Apple or Google), but it's decent, and better than anything in the area.

On May 13 The City of Ottawa planning committee approved Giant Tiger’s proposal for a new four-story office building and one-story retail-use podium at 2480 Walkley rd.

I stumbled upon pictures someone shared on LinkedIn and the exterior appears to be nearing completion. The “flagship store” attached to the HQ was scheduled to open this fall but I suspect they will need some more time.
