15 years ago, Banana Republic was the go-to for great every day pieces with a bit more of a tailored look.

COS feels very much like that, but the 2017 version. I've very much enjoyed COS experiences and product in both Europe and NYC.

My point was Walmart saved Cap mall from death years ago, so I agree? If saving suburban malls is what we want to do anyway.

When did the Espanalde movie theatre switch back to Cineplex from Landmark?
Guessing they'll keep it open until Park Royal build their cinema. Bidding war between Cineplex and Landmark?

Capilano Mall is closer to "urban" in form than a ot of other malls around.
The Sears comes out to Marine Drive and the mall has been built out to the sidewalk at the northeast corner.

It's a local mall and still very dated inside, but I think that it can be easily improved and densified. I won't say it's a true suburban mall because it's not surrounded by acres of parking on all sides.

This is interesting - an relevant to Capilano:
This seems like a modification of the earlier strategy to make the whole store off-price,
and may be a change from downsizing and subleasing space to 3rd party retailers.

Sears Canada Launches New Off-Price Strategy

Sears Canada has launched a new designer brand off-price concept called ‘The Cut’, which features designer brands at 30% to 60% off regular prices. The company is also in the process of restructuring its overall operations, which will include a primarily private-label focus.

Sears will carve out between 30,000 square feet and 40,000 square feet in each Canadian Sears store for its new ‘The Cut’ off-price division. The Cut will be evenly split between apparel and home goods. While The Cut’s planning, marketing and back-office operations are based in Toronto, Sears has also added a team of seven buyers in New York City.

The Cut officially launches in Canada on April 1, and it will eventually be rolled out to all 94 Sears Canada locations.
...

The Cut’s eCommerce website launched last week, and it features a wide range of designers, all at discounted prices.
...

The WWD report also notes that Sears Canada is in the process of transitioning to a completely private-label model under the Sears Essentials label. At the same time, The Cut will offer designer labels, but at a discount in a manner similar to competitors under the TJX Companies banners (Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense) as well as Hudson’s Bay Company-owned Saks OFF 5TH and Nordstrom Rack.

mentioned it in another thread, I wonder if Sears Canada could change its name to Simpsons, to avoid the US Sears failings.

Or maybe not...

"In December 2016, Sears Canada sold the remaining Eaton's intellectual property to a company affiliated with Cadillac Fairview,[14] the current owner of the Toronto Eaton Centre."

I could have sworn that in my much earlier days that the stores were called Simpson Sears.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpso...Simpsons-Sears

and then acquired by HBC.

Yeah, that was Joint Venture designed as Sears' entry into Canada.
The Joint Venture was eventually dissolved and Simpsons-Sears locations became just Sears, while Simpsons (Robert Simpson Co.) retained its own locations, primarily in Ontario and Quebec.
I don't think free-standing Simpsons locations were ever branded "Simpsons-Sears" (i.e. Queen St. Simpsons flagship in Toronto).

From the wiki:

Quote:
The agreement also contained a provision that would prove to be a major bone of contention in the coming years. Under its terms, Simpsons-Sears could not open a retail store within 25 miles of Simpson's existing stores in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Regina and London. In return, Simpson's promised not to build any stores outside of those five cities.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpso...Simpsons-Sears

But hey... more interestingly - Sears purchased the Simpsons trademark from Hudson's Bay in 2001, so maybe it could change to Simpsons after all if the trademark is being maintained ...

Quote:
The Canadian Intellectual Property Office database reports that the trademark to the name "Simpsons" was owned by Sears Canada from 2001 to 2008. It was purchased from the Hudson's Bay Company in 2001, ten years after the name had been retired. In 2008, Sears Canada transferred all of its trademarks (including the Simpsons trademark) to 1373639 Alberta Ltd., which appears to be a shell company of Sears Canada.[1]

Love it.

Downtown Vancouver must already be one of Nordstrom's highest grossing stores to be listed as having a Nike boutique along with #1 Nordstrom Chicago Mag Mile and #2 Nordstrom Seattle.

Nordstrom Toronto Eaton Centre isn't doing well (worse than Yorkdale).
The Urban TO forum noted that they fired their store manager there.

Uniqlo is out filming video spots around town with locals so I would expect a store announcement soon.

cool, it was muji that announced the locations right? I kinda get the 2 confused at times

I think Vancouver has more of a history with Nordstrom, most people in this area have been going to it for decades.
