my daily commute (Pittsburgh)

Scenes from my approx. 25-30 min. walk to school (Bloomfield to University of Pittsburgh) ... sometimes I bike or take the bus

my home (at right)

looking down Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield

starting towards school... the Cathedral of Learning looms in the distance

typical Bloomfield housing

crossing the bridge on Millvale Ave.

looking down at the East Busway

Baum-Centre corridor

the western edge of Shadyside

I apologize for the pinkness of the next few photos... my photos tend to turn out pink during precipitation events... just pretend they're supposed to be artistic

new condos u/c

now we're entering Oakland... a branch of the Rand Corp. in the distance

St. Paul's

Craig St.

Carnegie-Mellon University

The Carnegie

The Cathedral of Learning

Heinz Chapel

and finally i arrive at the 1970s abomination that houses my department

Yeah, I could see the artiness of your spontaneous pinkness. Awesome pics - that's a great walk to take every day.

Looks like a cute area, particularly the University neighborhood. Enjoyable walk I'm sure (especially in the spring & fall).

Nice area to commute.

I like this Cathedral. Beautiful tower!

It reminds me somewhat of the tower in Riverside Church in NYC... Ofcourse the Riverside Church Tower is much smaller it seems.

Ahhh, so many familiar sights. Thanks for the stroll down recent memory lane for me.

Try the Hong Kong rice bowl with sliced chicken, shiitake shrooms, greens, and sauce. Trust me it's good.

RamsayHank: Thanks for making this thread super-fabulous with that pink Grace Jones portrait lol

pj3000: I have yet to try Lulu's. Thanks for the suggestion. I love that little business district on Craig. There's a great record store there called Brave New World; and I tried the creperie for breakfast this weekend... the russian blintz w/ apricot preserve was delish.

Great shots! Even the less glamourous parts of Pittsburgh are interesting!

(but please don't perpetuate the mis-hyphenation of my alma mater--it's "Carnegie Mellon"...or was that a passive-aggressive Pitt move? )

What a day for Pittsburgh. I almost feel like I spent the day there. With that kind of scenery, I'd walk too.

that cathedral tower totally kicks ass, do people have classes in there? Or is it for school offices?

Both... as well as many other functions. There is a very informative wikipedia entry on the Cathedral of Learning here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_learning

The Cathedral has many classrooms... including one very unique feature.. 26 Nationality Rooms... which are functioning classrooms constructed in the style of ethnic groups that have settled in Pittsburgh (Greek, German, Ukrainian, etc.)... there are another 8 in development... the next being Turkish and Welsh. I would suggest viewing mrherodotus' recent Oakland neighborhood thread to see some pictures of these rooms. The Cathedral also houses the gorgeous Frick Auditorium and the departments of History, Philosophy, English and Religious Studies.

Imagine if the neighbors hadn't fucked up the block with siding and those ugly windows.
