Wow, didn't know there was a jazz club there! I thought I'd been to everyone in Chicago. I'll have to go there sometime.

Also, does anyone else hate the new google maps? It's so cluttered and slow. I dont want to see still pictures always at the bottom. I just want the MAP not a million pop up windows of stuff I'm not interested in. Then when I want to go to streetview the little man doesn't always work the first time it takes 3 times to go to the streetview.

anyway, i love that block. its an actual time machine. one day it will be razed and with it will go probably the last vestige of the seedy 70's era Loop.

btw, has anyone been to the jazz club on that block? ive always been meaning to go. im guessing the tourist quotient is a lot less than other downtown clubs.

Hence, this project is mostly earthmoving and re-vegetating. To further keep costs down, the earthmoving balances cut and fill so that no soils are added or removed from the project site. The "park" elements of the site are not paid for with the Army Corps grant but with a small pot of local matching funds, so there aren't many of them - a few gravel paths, boardwalks, and a little bridge.

Other features will come in over time - George Lucas has already committed to funding a bridge connection to the island at Waldron Drive. I'm expecting the Park District to find a new use for the old Meigs terminal in the next few years as well.
Thanks for the clarifications guys. Looks like an interesting project to follow.

^ Yep, "interesting" is indeed the right word for the story of this piece of land. From midnight bulldozer raids by an iron-fisted Mayor to a rising female architect, to George Lucas.

I believe that's for this mamma jamma:

Between this, "The Cleveland" (if that's what it's still called), and that small development across from "The Oak," that's 355 more units for this area.

^^was by there yesterday, the foundation work looks to be nearly complete but the core hasn't started rising quite yet. the crane went up in quite a hurry though.

And... sadly, 678 N Kingsburry isn't starting quite yet. The fencing and window work that was being done over the past week is for a Chicago Fire filming. 3am-9pm tomorrow half the building will be engulfed in some sort of fire.

I'd add failed Olympic bid to the narrative as well. NI was to feature prominently in the 2016 plan.

That land bar is the original eastern edge of the island. Not sure if they can remove it under the scope of the current grant.

I agree. All those empty lots around cabrini are filling in quick. Making goose island much more attractive.

The puzzling geometry of the bridge aside, I don't think they can build a fixed bridge there. The new fixed Halsted bridge is over the canal, not the river.

I think the reason it's 'puzzling' is because it's intended not solely as a means of getting from one side of the river to the other, but also as a viewpoint, providing scenic views of the City, thus the planters/separation between the bike path and walking path. I think.

Also, the geometry of the bridge might allow for a taller overpass, which could mean that the central portion need not be operable. Instead of a standard straight bridge which would need to be operable, this bridge has a longer linear surface area, which means it can go higher, thus potentially clearing the minimum height required to allow masted boats to go under.

The bridge has a Gateshead Millennium Bridge/ River Tyne, England vibe to it...

I have always been sad to see goose island be so outdated and empty feeling and ugly, this is great. hopefully goose island will have a population boom. i could see being able to live work and play all on one island. could be verry attractive

Nice. Is there any evidence that this will actually be a drive thru?

From EveryBlock neighborhood message board this April, for what it's worth:
...Chase has been working with our board to make sure the aesthetics tie into the building (they're using the same limestone exterior) and a green roof so neighbors on the north side see grass on the roof instead if ugly equipment. The folks on larabee are going to more inconvenienced because it's a drive thru. Traffic will be a nightmare!'
