Waterloo & Cedar Falls, Iowa

I decided to combine these two since they are next to each other along the Cedar River, and make up a Metropolitan Statistical Area of about 165,000. Cedar Falls (pop ~ 39,000) is home to the University of Northern Iowa (about 13,000 students). Looks like a nice place, but the fairly active downtown area seemed rather small for the size of the city.
Waterloo (pop ~ 69,000) is the county seat for Black Hawk County. Waterloo has some great old buildings (and a couple of not-so-great newer ones), a blue collar feel, and some activity downtown. I didn't really get into the neighborhoods, but tried to cover both downtown areas.

So let's start with Cedar Falls:

Nice thread. About 20 years ago I drove through Waterloo on my way to Dubuque and it struck me as being more substantial than I expected. I was thinking about doing a photography road trip in a couple of weeks and Waterloo/Cedar Falls was one of my choices. It looks like I will do Winona and La Crosse instead.

Yeah, Iowa surprises me. Drove to Dubuque and saw some great East Coast styled rowhouses. I was floored. Totally wasn't expecting that.

I've driven through these cities many times and was always struck by how different they look from one another. Although Waterloo is clearly the bigger city and has a huge John Deere plant, it's downtown has always seemed empty. The residential aareas I've seen look like they've seen better days.
Cedar Falls, probably due to Northern Iowa University, has a reasonably active downtown (The Blawk Hawk Inn is a gem) and looks much more prosperous.

Thanks for the replies guys. Gotta say I didn't know what to expect, but the tripthrough that region was well worth it.

@ Chef - sorry, didn't mean to knock you out of a visit, but I look forward to what you've got planned now.

Great set. I've got a good friend from Waterloo, but I've never been.

This is nice:

Haven't been to Winona, but LaCrosse is totally cool. Great downtown and some big bluffs on the eastern edge of town.

Dubuque is an awesome city. It's the oldest city in Iowa, and built differently than the rest of the state.

Very nice, Ithacan!! Waterloo seems to have a real decent building stock!! Cedar Falls, not so much, but still well preserved college town. Did you get a chance to hit the University of Northern Iowa??
