Go RSL! Just found out today that I have tickets to the game so I'll be driving out to KC on Thursday! Gotta take some Chiefs gear to drive off the angry Kansas Citians, no way they'd kill a fellow Chiefs fan even if my RSL beat their Wizards or Sporters or whatever you call them.

Hmm... Maybe I'll just wear my Chiefs gear under my RSL gear and put a Chiefs sticker on my car. They wouldn't attack a fellow Chiefs fan, would they?

I swear we have the worst luck with pro sport championships here in the state of Utah. There has to be a dark cloud over our state or we are cursed or something. Such is the Utah way.

Yeah. Lets not be a downer....RSL has done very well for being as young as the franchise is, and how small the market is here in Salt Lake. They played well yesterday.

Projects, I understand your very passionate about your foootball. However, there are millions of soccer fans here on the West Coast, particularly amongst the Latino community, who have huge respect for Real Salt Lake. Most now know where Salt Lake and Utah is because of Real's elite competitive edge year in and out. No one I know thinks Utah is cursed, just the opposite. Real Salt Lake has contributed a big postive boost for the home town rep, especially since the only other major are the Jazz at the moment and not the MLB or NFL.

RSL had one moment of greatness ( 2009 ) but since then we just keep coming up short when ever we would make it to another championship match. With each championship short coming RSL is becoming more and more like the Utah Jazz. And with Kreis leaving for NYCFC I felt last night was our last shot at winning that last championship for this club since who ever our next coach will be he will never be as great as Kreis was. Anybody can win one championship, but it's that 2nd championship is what makes a team be remembered. I think history's going to remember us as the best 2nd place team.

In terms of sports curses, we've got nothing on Ohio.

There isn't a team in the MLS from third place on down who isn't saying to themselves, coulda, shoulda, woulda. Are they all cursed too?

Ok so think about how in the last 20 years all the championship matches we have been to. The Utah Jazz during the late 90's. and now with RSL who since 2009 have played in four championship matches. 1 out of 6 we won.
But lets just keep this on RSL. Since winning the cup in 2009, RSl had a real chance of doing what no pro Utah sports team has never done before, have some kind of a Dynasty here in Utah. But since 2009 when ever they got to another championship match say either the CCL finals, Open Cup finals or MLS Cup finals they just keep coming up just a bit short. Hitting the crossbar seems to be the story our their lives when we just needed one more goal.
I'm not saying that RSL sucks. Intact I know that RSL is good enough to win another championship or two, to have that dynasty. But luck just never seems to be on our side. Sadly I think the ship has sailed away with Kreis more then Likily leaving for NY next season. And unless RSL can find another amazing coach, I don't see us going back to these championship matches anytime soon.

Talk to me in 80 years* and we'll see if SLC is cursed.

*Referring to the 84-year "Curse of the Bambino" on the Boston Red Sox, they didn't win a World Series for 84 years, after being one of the most successful teams prior to that.

And during that 84 year "curse" the people of Boston got to enjoy 16 NBA championships. 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986

That poor city.

8 NBA titles in eight years in a row. ( 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966 ) How did they survive the "curse"

Point is, for them, they at least had another team of greatness while the other team had a down point. For us, we have RSL, and then.....................the Jazz. Great.

Because "big cities" have the money to "buy" championships. Shame we can't just "win" them now a days.

To add insult to injury on a year of almosts, RSL has been shafted out of a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League. It has always been the Open Cup winner, the Supporters Shield winner and the two teams that made the MLS Cup. A decision came down yesterday stating that the rules have been changed effective immediately. It will no longer be the 2nd place team in the MLS Cup, but the winner of the conference that did not have the SS winner. Therefore, Portland Timbers will now take RSL's spot in the CCL.

Uggh.

Makes me wish RSL would of just won the damn thing. 2013 turned out to be a year of "almost"

To add.........Jason Kreis will no longer coach for RSL. He took the bait like a hungry fish and wants to coach for a bigger market. Jason Kreis is turning out to be one of the best coaches not only now, but maybe in the history of MLS. Shame we only have the one trophy to show for it with all the years we've had him. One Trophy and a heck of a lot of "runners up"

Honors

CONCACAF Champions League
Runners Up (1): 2010/2011

MLS Cup
Winners (1): 2009
Runners Up (1): 2013

U.S. Open Cup
Runners Up (1): 2013

MLS Western Conference Regular Season
Runners Up (3): 2010, 2012, 2013

MLS Playoffs Conference Champions
Winners (2)
West (1): 2013
East (1): 2009
Runners Up (2)
West (2):2008, 2011

MLS Supporters' Shield
Runners Up (1): 2010

Minor Trophies
Rocky Mountain Cup (6): 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
Carolina Challenge Cup (1): 2009

While I'm grateful for what Kreis has done for this club and turning it around, I can't help but think, we could of done so much more. We could of truly have had our first ever dynasty here in the state of Utah. So many missed opportunities. Will RSL go down in history as one of the greatest club during this last decade? or will it go down in history as the "yea' but team" or the 'best 2nd place team"?
Alot of that is going to depend of what happens next. Garth Lagerwey who is the GM for RSL is key. RSL talks about how that the team is the star. But the real star is not only Jason Kreis, but also Garth Lagerwey. Garth even came out and said Anybody can win one championship, but it's that 2nd championship is what makes a team be remembered. RSL needs that 2nd championship......badly. And they almost got it twice this year. Open Cup and MLS Cup.
Better hope Garth can pull a rabbit out of his hat with a replacement for Kreis. Otherwise, 2014 will be more of a rebuilding year for RSL with the coaching staff.

This poor thread never gets much attention. Maybe it could become a Utah Sports teams thread and we can post about any sports franchise or facility being updated. I saw Boise does this.

But on an Real Salt Lake note

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/articl...complex-real-s

None of this surprises me. Hansen has always looked at RSL as a way to do more development.
