"It is self-evident that St. Louis affected me more deeply than any other environment has ever done. I feel that there is something in having passed one's childhood beside the big river, which is incommunicable to those people who have not. I consider myself fortunate to have been born here, rather than in Boston, or New York, or London."

Sometimes I wake up and look outside at my city and wonder if I'm alive or dead, because this is as close to heaven on earth as it gets.

Well I'd definitely say that Chi town has the best bones in the midwest, but STL's are certainly very good. Top 5 for sure. Such a solid city with a unique vibe and great history. No doubt the future has a lot in store for this city. The first picture is probably my favorite, btw.

Steely Dan, I feel the same way about Cincy. I'd probably have to give Cincy the edge over STL in terms of bones, though it is definitely close. The hills of Cincinnati really push it over the top, plus the sheer density and New York feel of Over-the-Rhine. I think Cincy also has a slight edge on architecture too, though that is so ridiculously close. Very similar.

That is no take away from the Lou, however. I'm craving me some STL style pizza as we speak. Mmmmm... provel.

d'trolley, I definitely agree that Cincy has impressive bones. Over-the-Rhine and some other inner neighborhoods have great fabric, but St. Louis is more dense over a much bigger expanse overall. Nevertheless, river cities stick together!

Yea man they're both great cities. The midwest would not be the same without them.

Btw dude, I have to give you props for having more city pride than anyone I know. STL being as close to heaven on earth as it gets? Haha nice. It's cool that you live in a city you love that much.

You know it! There's no such thing as a perfect city, but I feel extremely lucky to call such a storied and interesting place my hometown.

My opinion on the whole "density" thing... is that the actual urban "environments" of Cincinnati are denser than St. Louis... but the overall "area" of the City of Cincinnati is less dense... because much of the city features rugged terrain. But if you actually look at the places where neighborhoods were built... Cincy wins.

Gentle cities like St. Louis could build uniformly medium-high density neighborhoods... while hilly cities like Cincy have a mix of high-density and low-density rustic hillside areas.

^This.

Milwaukee and Minneapolis are "denser" cities than St. Louis and you can thank topography and a solid grid system for that. Cincinnati (and Pittsburgh and other Eastern US hilly cities such as Providence) have too many hillsides and eroded areas to build "continuous density." That's why you'll see a a dense rowhouse/townhouse neighborhood in a valley surrounded by built-out 1930's Tudor homes in the hills in said cities.

Anyway, aside from the random Cincinnati talk in a thread about St. Louis, nice photos Gasm.

Seeing as how my girlfriend loves her goetta, imonna be getting that way more often, and i'm excited.

I think that in a way, and some may disagree, St. Louis is sort of a weird mix-mosh between the Ohio River cities and broad-blanket Great Lakes urbanism. It's so weird that a city could be like Cleveland and Cincinnati at the same time. There's strange little nodes that feel Ohio River-y and then we have the flat expanses, big apartments, and gigantic industrial complexes.
