If you are ever driving from Atlanta to Charlotte and need a place to stop for a spell, I highly recommend Greenville, South Carolina. Last time we were in Atlanta we were supposed to meet up with a friend in Charlotte for lunch. The timing wasn't going to work and we decided to meet in the middle. Recalling a years old thread from LSyd, I suggested Greenville.
Downtown Greenville is well maintained, pretty vibrant, and seemingly very healthy. The day we were there it was fairly cold outside (about 50 degrees with a cold wind) and there were still plenty of people out. The downtown is divided into two sections, Main Street and West Main, with Falls Park on the Reedy in between.
We had lunch downtown and then explored the park and fun pedestrian bridge. My daughter was 2 at the time, so I had some limits on how much photography I could get in. We also drove around some gorgeous neighborhoods just to the north of downtown. Greenville is home to huge facilities for Michelin and BMW, and there seemed to be a lot of affluence in the area.
Here are some of the photos I did manage to get:

I stopped by Greenville a few times on my way to Alabama. The first time I drove toward downtown on I385...what a pleasant surprise after the last curve into the CBD. Great downtown (and West End) - a hidden gem. Thanks for the tour plinko.
