Yeah, I was surprised. The retail bay looks like crap right now, RAD does some amazing stuff - see Clive Burger, National, Double Zero, Model Milk. They're also working on the new Korean restaurant on the corner of 4th street and 17th. Looking at their portfolio, makes me believe this new place will be another Concorde endeavour.

Bunch of interior work going on in the empty bay next to Candela's in Mission too.

I didn't even realize West had closed, glad it's going to be a less douchy place now.

The actor who played the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld is doing his schtick in Calgary tomorrow at Charlesglen Toyota in the far far far NW. I guess they have a deli in the dealership.

According to their website, National on 8th (formerly West) will be opening just in time for Stampede on July 4th.

Porto (17th Ave and 14 St SW) is closed. So business 1 this guy opens, after more than a year "coming soon" in two different locations, closes after 17 days, and business 2 is "coming soon" for not even three weeks and then opens and closes in six weeks.

I wish to hell somebody would open something amazing that would draw crowds in at that prime location in the Nimmons Block. I wish a Fratello or Rosso or Village Ice Cream (!) would open there. It is a beautiful space in an historic building and it has been a shitshow since I moved to Bankview. I know that Chocolate Shop did decent business evenings but it was still basically Sysco cakes in a smelly, dank space, and since then it's been failure after failure.

Geez that's crazy!

Cleaver's exterior has been revealed. French style doors and lighting, looks real classy so far. They've added some exterior tile to the new wine resto across the street too. The whole blocks really coming together!

Awesome. Just a little closer to home for me. Still a 15 minute drive, but closer.

Kind of sad really. As that was someones dream, but one's start-up budget should be slightly more than the change found in the couch.

Nite Owl had a soft opening last week. I couldn't help but notice that their sign looked suspiciously close to the Old Night Gallery sign. During Sled Island I was talking about that to someone whilst standing outside the Hifi Club. Guy next to us overheard and said the similarity was intentional and that they hired Tom Begely (sic) of Forbidden Dimension to design the sign.

Turns out the guy who overheard is the manager of Nite Owl and they're hoping to make it a live music venue like the Night Gallery. While it would be impossible to duplicate the Night Gallery, I do wish them well as we can always use another live music venue.
