San Antonio - United We Stand - Divided We Fall

My first trip to The Lone Star State; I recommend a trip.

you did s.a. right! you went over to the pearl, did you do the mission trail? i enjoy that drive. as an occasional visitor there is plenty to do both in and around this area.

the downtown itself might surprize first time visitors as it is maybe more urban than you might have guessed until you get there and see it. this may be an odd comparison but it kind of reminds me of minneapolis in that it is huddled around the riverwalk like downtown minneapolis clusters up tight with its skywalks (or used to).

Thanks all. Really enjoyed S.A., although it was somewhat discouraging to see so many beautiful buildings underused or used by Ripley's or a tacky souvenir store. Product of the beast I suppose.

^^^We did the Mission Trail and made it to all 5, amazing.

The state of Texas has recently purchased the entire commercial block across from the Alamo. The just-approved plan is for that area to be the site of a new museum, so the tackiness will disappear within the next 5 years or so.

More info here: http://savethealamo.com/proposal/index.html

To say it's not without controversy would be an understatement.

By the way, EXCELLENT photos.

Great set! Been awhile since I was last home. I enjoyed seeing what's changed outside of the major construction projects downtown. Pearl is a great area to get away from all the tourists traffic downtown. Hopefully the Tex-Mex didn't disappoint while you were in town.

Why "air-conditioned" is used as a hotel's billboard salespoint?

Its an old building. Funny enough, my first thought after seeing the picture, and remembering it when I lived there, is that I hope they never tear that down. It will only age gracefully and interestingly.

Great tour! SA is very gritty. I think if they could add in a good influx of jobs and of course condos and apartments, the city could really take off. With the amount of tourist already down there, a large resident population could really make the area quite bustling.

It's retro. It's an authentically old sign that is worth preserving in its own right.

AC was often used to distinguish * from **

The Tex-Mex was solid, but hit and miss.

I would love to have been connected with a few more locals to get out of the conference zone.

If somebody wants to visit Texas in order to see Texas culture, I recommend San Antonio.

Ah yeah, there's one of the rare 'man made' UNESCO sites in the States over there.

If only they got more seriously involved instead of acting grumpy at UNESCO, maybe they'd have more listed sites by now, aside from their national parks registered as natural ones.
I guess it's mostly a matter of lobbying, like so many other things, you know...

It's probably interesting for drawing tourists and their cash, like prestige or something.

Happy New Year to San Antonio and the entire world by the way.
Was on a little break, so I'm a bit late here.
