Montreal has been lacking a horse racing track for several years now since the Hippodrome/Blue Bonnets closed down. Horse track is a good way to kill a couple of hours. But I don't think this is much a part of Quebec culture? There's only one in the province. In Trois Rivieres.

Toronto lacks a proper casino like Montreal has. Just Woodbine racetrack, which has slots. Don't know if they have a few table games now? City is still opposed to it I guess. Have to venture out to Niagara, Rama, Brantford and Port Perry.

I think Montrealers can find 1000 better ways to kill a couple of hours over going to see a bunch of horses running around.

And yes, I do believe that it isnt ingraned in the culture, as horse racing tends to be more of an anglo thing. When the anglos punked out and went down the 401, horse racing slowly died along with it.

I suppose the closest thing to Chinese garden in TO would be Kariya Park in Mississauga just below Square One. Japanese though. And not very big.

I never thought of Chicagoland being anglo but I will run with that for now.

For Chicago the last thing we need is another Horse track.

We got 4 good active ones and probably one too many.

Arlington Park
Balmoral Park
Hawthorne Race Course
Maywood Park

https://chicago.cbslocal.com/top-lis...t-race-tracks/

When I went to collage in Des Moines their horse track could not compete and eventfully shut down.

And please no more dog tracks, those are disgusting.

The state has too many horse tracks already.

State Menu

Arlington Park(T)
Aurora Downs(D)
Balmoral Park (H)
Cahokia Downs(D)
Fairmont Park(T)
Hawthorne Race Course(T)
Maywood Park(H)
Quad City Downs(D)
Sportsmans Park(D)
Washington Park(D)

The only one decent enough to bring your family and kids to is Arlington Park track.

The rest can be sleazy as well as the number of off track betting parlors, which likely numbers in the mid 100's.

Missing from Ottawa? An NHL team.

I don't even mean this in a "haha the team is so bad they're barely an NHL team!" way, I mean it in a "They literally don't play in Ottawa" way. If the team plays out of LeBreton the city feels so much bigger and prominent, IMO.

In terms of non-sport I feel as if Ottawa really lacks a good mid-sized music venue. We have arenas (Lansdowne, CTC) and full-on concert halls (NAC) but we lack a good medium-sized concert for those acts that are between big arena shows and smaller bars/clubs.

In North Bay, Ontario: A Starbucks. We had one, then it closed, along with the Target it was located in. Timmins has Starbucks now, for crying out loud.

I don't really miss Starbucks, as I almost never went there when I lived in the places that had them, but it's the only thing I could think of.

Other than that? I can't really think of much a city of ~50,000 really has that we don't. We actually do quite well with regards to 'stuff' otherwise - a university, decent arena, arts centre, decent movie theatre, etc. etc.

Have placed many bets on races at Arlington Park while at tracks here or OTB joints. And I stayed there once. Took the train into downtown Chicago from there. That's my kind of suburb.

I don't think dog racing is allowed in Canada. So of course out of curiosity, I checked out some greyhound racing in Boston and Miami. While horse racing is majestic, dog racing is just funny. It's a laugh watching them chase the mechanical rabbit.

GTA has three and I believe Ontario has 13 horse tracks and used to be 17. It's a dying industry. The numbers will continue to drop in the coming years.

A broad concern in the Region of Waterloo is that it lacks the cultural and other amenities that will attract and retain top tech talent. K-W lacks, and badly needs, a fast train connection to Toronto.

For a global city of 6.5+ million, Toronto is missing:

- A major contemporary art gallery. Yeah, there's the MOCCA, but it should be at least 3X the size of its expansion.
- Electric suburban trains. This is also on the horizon, but I feel that the progress being made on this front is very incremental and it probably won't happen to any real extent. We also messed up the layout of the tracks/shed in the Union station renovation which will make retrofitting very difficult.
- A second international airport. We have the pint-sized YTZ and the underachieving YHM. That said, the trend in global megacities seems to be toward consolidating major airports into single superhubs.

There are some other obvious and more glaring ones, like a subway system with more than just 2.5 lines, but it's not worth rubbing salt into that well-known wound.

Toronto: A dedicated NFL stadium. If it was an American city of similar size, it would almost certainly have one by this point.

Alternately, something like the Melboune Cricket Ground, or major stadium that's capable of holding 70,000+ people.

The Skydome is not quite large enough for what I'm imagining - that's more on par with MLB fields.

There will be no NFL stadium in Toronto unless an owner pays for it all. Neither the province nor the federal government will spend a cent on such a project. It is a political no-go zone.

Oh yeah, I'm in total agreement with you. I fully understand why Toronto doesn't have these things.

I think Vancouver use to be the strip club capital of Canada. Gives a city some edge. Major rip off though. was in a Montreal establishment recently, and along with cover, you have to tip a guy to walk you 10 feet to your seat. Then 22 bucks for double high balls. I'll still go back though. lol.
