Works on the tallest building in the world impress Brazilians

São Paulo - Brazilian businessmen in the civil construction sector who are on a trade mission to the United Arab Emirates were impressed yesterday while visiting the works of Burj Dubai, the building that intends to be the tallest in the world, in Dubai. "It is a first world construction," stated the secretary general at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Michel Alaby, who is accompanying the group. The delegation, which has been in the Arab country since April 22, returns to Brazil on Saturday.

Burj Dubai will be 705 metres tall and will be ready in December 2008. The project developer is Emaar Properties, from Dubai, and Korean company Sansung is responsible for the construction. According to Alaby, at the site there are 65 cranes and 15 worksite lifts. There are 3,155 people working, most from India. "Each floor takes four days to be completed," he said.

Up to now the building already has 41 floors completed. Emaar does not inform the total number of floors the building is going to have, but Arab news agencies like Gulf News have already informed that the building will have at least 189 floors. The tallest inhabited building in the world is currently Taipei 101, in the capital of Taiwan, with 101 storeys and 509 metres height. At the beginning of this year, Kuwait announced that they are going to build an even taller building, at one kilometre in height, the Mubarak al Kabir Tower.

In Dubai there are already five buildings among the 100 tallest in the world, like Emirates Tower One, in 12th place in the ranking, at 355 metres height, Burj Al Arab, in 20th, at 321 metres; Emirates Tower Two, 25th at 309 metres; Century Tower, 56th at 269 metres and Chelsea Tower, 90th at 250 metres.

Burj Dubai will include residential apartments and luxury hotel Trade Mark Armani, belonging to brand Giorgio Armani. The construction of the hotel slab, which has an area of 5,600 square metres, consumed 225,000 tonnes of sand. The hotel should have 250 suites. The area around Burj Dubai will also include other great projects, like Dubai Mall, a shopping centre that intends to be the largest in the world, an artificial lake, a residential complex with nine buildings, restaurants and hotels. According to Alaby, the total investment in these projects totals US$ 14 billion and when everything is ready, it should generate 14,000 direct jobs.

Opportunities

According to Alaby, the greatest difficulty that the companies in the Emirates are facing is the lack of construction companies due to the great construction boom in the country. "They end up hiring Australian, Italian, Chinese, Indian, North American and Korean construction companies," he said. "We have great chances in this market, but it is necessary to find the correct partner," he finished off. Alaby believes that on returning from the trip, Brazilian companies should proceed with the contacts made with the Arabs and should establish partnerships.

President of Korea visits Burj Dubai Tower
Thursday, May 11, 2006

Armed with state-of-the-art technology and a pioneering spirit, Samsung Engineering and Construction is emerging as a world-class builder of tall towers.

The company, one of the divisions of Samsung Corp., began to build an impressive reputation in the world skyscraper market after it won the contract to construct the 92-story Petronas Twin Towers (452 meters) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1993.

Since then, the company has completed numerous mega-high-rise building projects, such as the fit-out works of the 101-story Taipei Financial Center (509 meters), which is currently the world's tallest building.

Such landmark achievements in the skyscraper construction market helped the company win a large-scale project to build the world's tallest tower in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

The Samsung-led consortium, which included Belgium's Besix and the UAE's Arabtec, won the $900 million project, by defeating seven other consortia, in December 2004.

The construction of the "Burj Dubai" tower is part of the UAE's $8 billion 500-acre Downtown Dubai Development Project, which also includes the building of a mammoth shopping mall and a rich residential complex.

It will have a total floor area of about 460,000 square meters.

"We awarded the contract to Samsung Corp. because it has a reputation for unrivalled expertise in constructing tall towers," said Issam Galadari, vice chairman of Emaar Properties in the UAE, the company in charge of the project. Emaar Properties is the UAE's largest real estate developer invested by its government.

Samsung officials said the company was able to win the project thanks to its achievements in building other skyscrapers around the world with more than 50 stories each and the possession of more than 120 experts in engineering.

They added that by winning this project, Samsung construction has now been involved in the construction of the world's three tallest towers - the Burj Dubai, the Taipei Financial Center, and Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers.

They said they expect that their successful bid for the project will help the company secure a leading position in the world's skyscraper construction market.

"When the Burj Dubai project is completed in 2008, our company will be the world's undisputed leader in skyscraper construction," said a company official.

Lee Sang-dae, president and CEO of Samsung Corp.'s engineering and construction division, said, "The company gained credibility in the world skyscraper construction market, which is forecast to grow to $40 billion by 2010, by winning the bid in Dubai."

"We expect to win more high-rise building construction contracts around the world and more construction orders in the Middle East."

During his three-day visit to the UAE, which starts today, President Roh Moo-hyun is expected to visit Dubai to tour the construction site for the Burj Dubai and offer his encouragement to company construction officials. It is the first time that a Korean President has made an official visit to the UAE. Dubai is growing into a dynamic international trade zone where a number of local companies, including Samsung construction, are actively engaged in business.

The company was awarded first prize in the national customer satisfaction index on housing for the eighth consecutive year in 2005 and placed first in the evaluation of domestic builders in 2004 and 2005.

Kiwi expats make most of high life in booming, tax-free Dubai
NewZealand Herald
Wednesday May 31, 2006

You could say Aucklander Greg Sang is at the top of his profession, literally. The Dubai-based engineer is overseeing the building of the world's tallest tower - the Burj Dubai.

The final height of the US$900 million ($1.4 billion) building is top secret until completion by 2008, but it's expected to soar beyond 100 storeys and may top 800m. The surrounding 202ha community will include the world's biggest shopping mall, with 16,000 carparks.

Mr Sang's rise to the top began back home in Auckland, where he was schooled and earned an Auckland University engineering degree. He left for Hong Kong in 1990, then later made the move to Dubai for the Burj Dubai project.

Like many New Zealand expats in Dubai, the 40-year-old has no immediate plans to return home.

With so much growth in the city and the lure of working in a tax-free environment, it's easy to see why.

While construction is booming in Dubai - rumour has it up to one third of the world's cranes are in the region - it's just one of a number of industries attracting New Zealand businesses and workers.

New Zealand Trade Commissioner Sam Lewis says New Zealanders are found in a variety of sectors in Dubai.

"What is important to get across is the diversity of the engagement of New Zealanders here," he says.

"And not necessarily working for New Zealand companies, but the fact that they are embedded into the local business infrastructure is a real boon for New Zealand insofar as we can tap into these people."

Expats say they enjoy not paying tax and the city's proximity to Europe, but they miss the New Zealand lifestyle.

Auckland sisters Corinne and Jacqueline Bowker never intended to stay as long as they have - 10 and 15 years. They are managing partners of the Lime Tree Cafe, a genuine New Zealand-style cafe - a rare find in the Middle East.

The cafe has a strong expat following, with Westerners making up 90 per cent of their customers, but is also making inroads with local people.

The intense summer heat - with temperatures soaring up towards 50C - changes the way you live.

"Towards the end of May that's the end really, we don't go outside now until September because it's too hot. So you're pretty much indoors in air conditioning all the time," she says.

The market is quite nationality driven, so they feel a responsibility to maintain New Zealand's good reputation.

But hard work is essential and it's a myth that Dubai can be used as a get-rich-quick scheme. "If you come in and think 'I'm going to make a fast buck and go home' it won't work," Jacqueline says.

Update- Some info on the mall next to the tower:

Eversendai to build part of Dubai Mall
Business Times
June 3 2006

STRUCTURAL steel construction firm, Eversendai Corp (M) Sdn Bhd, has won a RM130 million contract to build part of the world's largest mall dubbed the Dubai Mall in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Group managing director Datuk A. K. Nathan said Eversendai was awarded the job by Alico Ltd, a Dubai-based company, earlier this year.

"The Dubai Mall is a unique structure which has got its own complexity. It needs innovative construction methodology," said Nathan.

The multi-storey glass facade mall will offer some five million sq ft of commercial property, accommodating over 1,000 individual shops in between 10 and 15 distinct "malls-within-a mall" concept.

It will have a mixture of sophisticated retail and luxury leisure facilities including the world's largest indoor gold souq, food court, waterfront atrium and oasis fountain, among others.

The Downtown Dubai District, the biggest urban development in the Middle East, will also feature the Burj Dubai, which will be the world's tallest tower, the Residences, Burj Dubai boulevard and lake park, Burj Dubai Lake hotel and service apartments and a business hub.

EMAAR says Dec. 2008, but I think it will be later than that. I'm sure they are now thinking April 15th, the anniversary day the tower began to rise?

Starting to become as mysterious as the final height.

Yeah, but it's really nice to see the progress on it. I really want to visit Dubai in 10 years when that and many others are done and everything is an immaculate paradise!!! If I'm rich enough I'd almost consider moving there too.

The mystery is kind of cool though, we just have to keep watching them build it!!!

Talking Burj Dubai hits Level 50!!!!

Emaar's iconic Burj Dubai scales level 50

Global real estate major Emaar Properties marked a milestone in its historic quest to build the world's tallest tower as the AED 3.673 billion (US$1 billion) Burj Dubai scaled 50 levels today.

This remarkable feat in the construction of Emaar's iconic super tower at the Burj Dubai Downtown development was accomplished in less than 900 days since excavation work started in January, 2004. Work is on course for a 2008 completion with one new level added every four days.
'This is a significant moment for us,' said Mr Mohamed Ali Alabbar, Chairman, Emaar Properties.

'We are witnessing 'History Rising' - on schedule. With the world's eyes on Burj Dubai, this is a moment of pride not only for Emaar but also for Dubai. The super tall tower, now at level 50 and going strong, is a symbol of Dubai's aspirations and capabilities.'

Designed by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Burj Dubai is being constructed by high-rise construction experts South Korea's Samsung Corporation, and Turner Construction International is the project and construction manager.

Over 3,000 workers are currently working on the Burj Dubai. More than 160,000m³ of high-quality concrete and 25,000 metric tons of steel rebar have so far been used in the construction. Specially developed concrete pumps are employed to generate 350 bars of pressure and pump to a height of 600 metres.

Eleven cranes and the world's fastest high-capacity construction hoists - with a speed of up to 2 m/sec (120 m/min) - are used to move men and material to the lofty heights.

Burj Dubai is a pioneering example of entrepreneurial vision, architectural capabilities and engineering prowess meeting to create a towering international landmark.

'Burj Dubai is more than a tower; it is a global statement that will put Dubai firmly in the minds of the rest of the world. The tower boosts civic pride by creating an unparalleled landmark that demonstrates the capability of the UAE people to implement any project regardless of its size or challenges,' added Alabbar.

Blending retail, commercial and residential spaces, the Burj Dubai derives design inspiration from a desert flower and features architectural elements that celebrate the Islamic heritage of the region.

The fast-track construction employs modern building techniques including the use of self-climbing formwork for walls and prefabricated rebar cages. The tower has a base floor plate of 33,000 sq. ft., which tapers as the structure rises skywards.

Burj Dubai will feature the exclusive Armani Hotel designed by Giorgio Armani, luxurious corporate suites and offices, serviced residential suites, apartments, four swimming pools, restaurants, exclusive resident's lounge's, 15,000 sq. ft. of fitness facilities, recreational and entertainment facilities and an observatory, planned for the 124th level, offering spectacular views of the city and the Arabian sea.

Safety and security features - against high wind velocities, soaring summer temperatures, seismic disturbances, fire and other threats - have been incorporated into the design of Burj Dubai. 'The project capitalizes on the latest advances in wind engineering, structural engineering, structural systems, construction equipment, materials and methods,' said Greg Sang, Assistant Director - Projects, Emaar Properties.

Burj Dubai is part of Emaar's 500-acre mixed use AED 73 billion (US$20 billion) Burj Dubai Downtown development which combines commercial, residential, hotel, entertainment, shopping and leisure outlets, with open green spaces dotted with lakes and water features.

Ongoing projects within Burj Dubai Downtown include The Old Town and Old Town Island, The Dubai Mall, Burj Dubai Business Hub, The Lofts, Burj Views, South Ridge, Burj Dubai Boulevard, The Residences and 8 Boulevard Walk.
