hey guys, just an update here:

https://thisplacematters.ca/project/...apitol-theatre

"We have been sponsored by the Hamilton Heritage Foundation in the This Place Matters funding competition. Please support us in restoring an important piece of our history. We need your votes to help restore the Capitol Theatre Hamilton.
Here is the link:
https://thisplacematters.ca/project/...pitol-theatre/
You can vote every 24 hours."

Basically its a country wide heritage contest where the winner will receive money that can go towards restoring their project - the capitol theatre is the ONLY building in all of hamilton that qualifies, and all you have to do is sign up to the link above and vote every day!

Since they rely on on donations, their own money, and crowdfunding, to win this contest would allow them to finish the project much sooner! You don't even have to donate (although naturally you can) all you have to do is sign up and vote every day, so please to - and please share this everywhere!

once again the link is https://thisplacematters.ca/project/restoration-facade-features-historic-loewscapitol-theatre

no it never officially opened - it was open for private events- a lot of money was needed for the glass entrance.

So typical Hamilton.

Buy a building without means to do the work it requires, attempt to crowdfund & source grants to pay for it, eventually let the property sit and stagnate.

I mean great on them for the good intentions, but lets be real; don't go into a venture like this unless you are 100% able to secure capital for construction.

Yeah the City shouldn’t be taking on more property when our current stock are in need of dire renovations.

it was a good attempt on their part - better than anything else that had been done to that building imo.

Sometimes the money just doesn't roll in your direction.

Anyone with intentions of creating positive development within the city should be commended for their efforts.

The problem is simple though. Prior to securing a lot, you need to have a good indication if you can actually construct the building or structure.

The crowd sourcing thing was a bit interesting. Gotta give them credit for trying though.

Hopefully someone comes along soon and has an equally ambitious idea for this building.

From working just across the street for the last 4 years, I don't know if the idea they had in mind was really the best idea for this spot.

You already have Mills Hardware next door, Toast around the corner on John, Redchurch in the Gore across the street, and a slew of great restaurants and bars on King William.

I especially think that with Mills Hardware next door, that this idea was a little 'meh'. They probably could have been a bit more innovative with what they did with the space or what the intention was.

This isn't meant to bash the existing or former owner and his/hers idea, but I never really got behind it entirely.

I think the idea was a place for people to go to after a movie or a restaurant, which would provide burlesque entertainment a la circa early 1900s. I thought that idea was pretty cool.
