BOSTON | Back Bay Station Skyscraper | FT | FLOORS | 2 Towers

Back Bay Station Redo Could Come w/ Skyscraper on Top

Quote:
The folks behind the TD Garden towers want to plunk soaring buildings above Back Bay Station, one of the busiest stops on the T. In exchange, developer Boston Properties would revamp the station, making it less dudgeon-like and more mall-like.

Casey "Scoops" Ross at The Globe has the details: "The gray, recessed facade along Dartmouth would be pulled out to the sidewalk and encased in glass to create better retail storefronts. The interior station would receive a complete overhaul, restoring soot-covered architectural details and removing its old cages and turnstiles."

That's for the station (conceptualized in the image above). As for the two towers that Boston Properties would build atop it, at least one would be a skyscraper, height indeterminate, and together they would be a mix of residences and commercial space. While the station renovations might start next year, the towers could be several calendar clicks off due to the construction costs and to building above so many rail lines.

Skyscraper envisioned at Back Bay station

Quote:
The owner of the John Hancock Tower in Boston is negotiating with Governor Deval Patrick’s administration to renovate and manage the MBTA’s Back Bay Station in exchange for the right to build a towering complex of residences, stores, and offices, state officials said Tuesday.

A deal could eventually allow developer Boston Properties Inc. to construct a skyscraper and at least one other building above the rehabilitated station, which would get a new retail arcade, ventilation upgrades, and a glass facade along Dartmouth Street. City officials would also have to approve the new buildings.

The tallest building will reach to around 400 feet and the shortest will reach about 300. The boxy one will be around 400 feet or just below it.

Preliminary heights, for those who care:
365', 298', 388' (these are to highest occupiable floor; mechanicals are higher)
