Port of Portland spokesman Josh Thomas described the atmosphere at PDX today as "abuzz" after Delta Airlines quietly announced that, beginning this August, they will add year-round daily service between Portland and Paris, France as well as four flights per week to Beijing, China.
Richard Anderson, chief executive of Delta Airlines, said this afternoon that "these new flights will cement our presence in the Portland region and reinforce our belief that Portland is a growing and dynamic city and an international destination for business and recreation".
Thomas indicated that "forces have been aligning for several years now" to expand the region's international connections. "Recently we've received inquiries from many different international airlines, including British Airways, Mexicana, Qantas, Emirates, and even Lufthansa
", he said. While not every airline that studies the Portland market will establish a presence here, Thomas said that there is a "strong likelihood" that we'll have direct connections to Mexico City and another European city, most likely London or Frankfurt, "within a year".
