Oh nice! I didn't even know that was even being considered let alone happening. That will be great for that area!

That looks not bad, even though it's turning generic 70s into generic 2010s. I guess no one likes concrete anymore, for the time being anyway.

Its more of a "we need to improve the sustainability of the building and a new concrete facade is too expensive"

At least I think that is usually what happens......

A delicious restaurant. Ontario has tons of restaurans that we don't have here, not even in West Edmonton Mall. But on the flip-side, we have tons that they don't have.

IIRC it's only the retail area of the Yonge-Eg centre that's being redone right now. They are building over a well-intentioned but windswept and barren plaza to expand the retail area of the centre. I think there will be some room inside to replace the functions of the plaza. Normally not something I'd support but it really did need it in this case.

The towers will eventually get some new floors (you can see where the new ones start in the rendering) as well as a reclad, but this won't happen for some time. I think the addition of new office space was part of the reason the city allowed this to happen. From RioCan's perspective it's probably the most onerous.

It's your run of the mill chain restaurant.

Think milestones but even worse (if that's possible).

As for the reclad at Yonge & Eglington, I think it's a welcome makeover. Anything to get rid of that ugly concrete facade.

I never knew that building at Bank and Sparks was a reclad. Early 1950s?

The less said about the former Bank Street Chambers, the better!

Either that or one of the NCC's famous tear downs and "replicate" like the old Castore Hotel on Sussex. I thought there was an Urbsite article about the Sun Life/Rolex building, but I can't find it. But here is the Castor;

Original;

NCC re-clade 1960s;

NCC tear down and "replicate";

After the recent refresh;

Almost forgot, the Union du Canada building in the Byward Market; built in 1967 as the head office of a French Canadian insurance company of the same name, Claridge homes wants to add 4 floors and convert it into a hotel. Due to neighbor complaints about height, the company is considering tearing it down and rebuild an identical building (re-clad version) but with lower floor plates (as an office building, the floor to ceiling height is significantly higher than regular hotels). The fate of the building is in the hands of the OMB (provincial body who can reverse City zoning decisions). Of course, the neighbors are also playing the "heritage" card.

Just a note, the Yonge eglinton centre is just having it's base reconstructed currently. the reclad of the towers isn't going ahead.
