I haven't seen any plans of what tracks on the bridge would connect to. Sure there's tracks on both sides of the river, but linking them wouldn't result in a meaningful increase in service. There aren't any existing service patterns that have the Tappan Zee as a critical missing link. The only thing that makes since would be adding a new line from Suffern, Spring Valley, Nyack, Tarrytown, White Plains, to Port Chester generally paralleling 287. It would be fantastic at creating new commuting modes to/from White Plains relieving 287, with the added bonus of a link to the NEC, but except for the section from Suffern to Spring Valley, the ROW would have to be created from scratch. Very pricey.

Anyway, my main question is this; What would rail on the Tappan Zee link up to?

NJIT Spring Valley line and MNRR Hudson line? Hard to tell if enabling Hudson Line commutes into NJ is worth it. Or do you mean adding a new MNRR line west of the river?

Perhaps connecting Port Jervis and Pascack Vally lines to Hudson as a way for Northern NJ and Rockland NY riders to access GCT. Could even create a connection to White Plains.

Not sure how much sense that makes, but it's what comes to mind.

Hmm, Port Jervis and Pascack to White Plains does sound pretty good. Still has the issue of carving a new ROW though .

It would run from Hillburn,NY to Port Chester,NY

-New Infill station would be constructed at Hillburn,NY on the MNRR Port Jervis Line , north of the NJT Yard

-Suffern to Spring Valley would use abandoned yet preserved Railway ROW , the old stations would return , East Suffern , Monsey , and Airmont

-Reopening of that line would allow for NJT/MNRR Pascack Valley Service to Extend to Suffern

-Nanuet to South Nyack , this section would run along side the Interstate , Stations would be added at Nanuet Route 59 Park & Ride , West Nyack and South Nyack

-The Proposed West Shore Line (Hoboken to Newburgh) would intersect the Line at West Nyack Station , so a one seat ride from those Communities to GCT would be possible. Along with CSX Freight trains into NYC...

-The Line would then cross over the Tappan Zee Bridge and Enter Westchester with a Station at Tarrytown East

-After Tarrytown East the line would split , one service would head into a Tunnel and merge onto the Hudson Line via a Flying JCT and another would continue onto Port Chester

-The Tarrytown to White Plains segment is a mix of Tunnels and Viaducts , Stations would Include Elmsford , Fairview and White Plains Transportation Center (MNRR Harlem Line). Some Plans have this route hugging I-287 which is cheaper and others have it Under NY 119 which is more expensive but you could go insane with TOD and Job Creation...

-White Plains to Port Chester is mainly above ground with the exception of the East White Plains Station. This segment would be the easiest and cheapest as its relatively flat and uses the Interstate ROW. Stations would include East White Plains & Purchase. The Line would then merge back into the New Haven Line via a Flying JCT towards Stamford.

Anyone who uses this corridor a few times a week or month knows how badly needed this Rail line is...buses get jammed way to easily even with lanes.

Material Silo collapsed onto two others in their concrete production facility nearby. Possible delays.

"Builders say three silos have failed or collapsed on a floating concrete plant at the site of the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

A spokeswoman for Tappan Zee Constructors, Carla Julian, says in an email that there were no injuries in the accident Tuesday on the Hudson River."

Cool article in Scientific American January 22, 2015 |By Amy Nordrum

Popular Cable-Stay Bridges Rise Across U.S. to Replace Crumbling Spans

"The new bridge being built across the Hudson River is the latest to use this cost-effective design, which goes up faster and requires fewer materials than competing methods for medium-length bridges—and it looks better, too "

Tappan Zee Bridge: State police HQ demolished

Quote:
For the new Tappan Zee Bridge to rise, buildings must fall.

That started Friday when a hydraulic excavator brought down half of the former State Police barracks on South Broadway, chunk by chunk.

Tom McGuinness, construction compliance engineer for the state Thruway Authority, called the demolition "the next step in what is going to be a very busy construction season." The rest of the police headquarters will come down in a few months, with a nearby Thruway maintenance facility to follow.

The site, which adjoins the northbound Thruway leading to the Tappan Zee Bridge, will serve as an area for bridge builder Tappan Zee Constructors to store construction equipment and stockpile materials. It already includes the entrance ramp that used to lead to the bridge but was closed a year ago.

In three years, McGuinness said, the land will serve as the gateway to the bicycle and pedestrian path on the northern span of the $3.9 billion twin-crossing. A larger parking lot will be built alongside a new Thruway building that will be shared by both state workers and the public.

The 3-mile path will connect to South Nyack but its exact landing spot is still up for discussion.

State police Troop T and some Thruway workers relocated to Rockland last summer, moving into the former Journal News printing plant in West Nyack. Tappan Zee Constructors is contractually obligated to return the two agencies to Tarrytown and rebuild their facilities when construction is finished.

When the state police get their barracks back in 2018, they'll be located on the south side of Thruway near the current toll plaza building.

For now, demolition will continue at 333 S. Broadway.

Cool animation of the jump forms and an article on the construction reaching halfway point.

Halfway there: New Tappan Zee Bridge hits big milestone

"ON THE HUDSON — Construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge is halfway done.

Work on the massive $4-billion project has reached the 50 percent mark two years after it started, Tom McGuinness, construction compliance engineer for the New York State Thruway Authority, said Wednesday during a media boat tour of the 3-mile site."
