NBC's Matt Lauer can't resist Vancouver girls

VANCOUVER — Celebrity Today show host Matt Lauer has split from his wife and the Enquirer gossip tabloid said the breakup was fuelled by the NBC star going "wild" during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and cheating with two women.

Lauer and his wife have reportedly been living apart for more than two months.

"The Enquirer learned an enraged Annette accused Matt of fooling around during Today's on-site coverage of the Olympics in Vancouver," the tabloid reports on its website.

"According to a source, the broadcaster and colleagues "went wild" at nightspots."

The Enquirer reports that Lauer stood up his wife on Valentine's day and also chose to remain in Vancouver after the Olympics and the rest of the "Today" crew returned to New York.

"I heard he and Annette are breaking up. I was not shocked to hear that but it's very sad," Lauer's ex-wife, Nancy Alspaugh, told the Enquirer.

I guess he went straight from partying to the set of his show, since it started its live broadcast at 4:00 am Vancouver time.

That guy is good.

Matt Lauer did seem a little punchy when he was a guest on the Colbert Report's Quadrennial Cold Weather Athletic Competition.

the Vancouver sun is using the Enquirer as a credible news source? that's a new low.

in any event, it's all complete BS:
In fact, says Lauer, his wife and three children were with him on Feb. 14 skiing at the Whistler resort near Vancouver. As for the partying, Lauer notes that he was getting up at 1:30 a.m. to make it to Today's Olympic set for broadcasts that began at 4 a.m. local time. As a result, he was in bed most nights by 7:30 p.m.

He also says he returned to New York two days before the rest of the Today staff. "This is all made up," Lauer says. "All they had to do was check.
"

I am having a bit of a hard time with this story. They were taping each morning at 4:00 am, and it is a professional show. I somehow just don't imagine the 40-something staff rolling in with a hang-over after a night of binge drinking and sex. I suspect the chirpiness would come across more like claws across a chalk-board if they did.

If there were simply reports of marital issues or some specific incident, perhaps I could see it. But the entirety of the story just rings like fiction.

Not to mention that anytime someone's ex is talking to the enquirer about how "sad" it is that "they hear" their former spouse's marriage is on the rocks, it comes across a little, oh what's the word I'm looking for? Bitter . . . yeah, that's it .

It's funny because it's usually on articles, such as this one, that are the #1 read article of the day on the news site that posts it.

Humans are strange.
