I saw one on burrard @ davie the other night they are pretty neat

A year after a man died from lying out in the sun in Grandview Park on a scorching day, Vancouver has installed portable water fountains around the city — and is inviting residents to take refuge during this year’s heatwave in community centres and libraries.

The five new fountains are on Commercial Drive at Broadway and at Napier Street, at Burrard and Davie streets, at 70th Avenue and Granville Street and in Vanier Park.

In July 2009, on a day when temperatures soared to a record 33.8 C, Curtis Brick, 46, was found convulsing in Grandview Park and, despite medical help, died later in hospital.

To help prevent similar tragedies, the city has also added information to its website on how to avoid the dangers of the heat and what to do to help others.

The beefed-up safety measures are part of the extreme hot weather preparedness and response plan adopted by council earlier this month.

The website also reminds citizens to keep out of the heat, wear a hat, drink water before thirst hits and take cool showers.

It advises people to call 911 if they suffer heatstroke, symptoms of which include an absence of sweat, a fast heart rate, passing out, high body temperature, confusion or lack of energy.
