Vancouver G8/G20 protest turns nasty

I guess these were for the people who couldn't afford to get there...

Vancouver G8/G20 protest turns nasty

By Yolande Cole, The Province June 26, 2010 6:02 PM

Police say a group of protesters swore and kicked at officers and tried to damage their equipment as police facilitated a “legitimate” anti-G8/G20 demonstration in East Vancouver Saturday afternoon.

Police reported no damage and no arrests or injuries to either officers or protesters during the three-hour demonstration.

“The Vancouver police faced an element who attempted to distract from the cause of the legitimate protesters today after people gathered to demonstrate against the G8 and G20 meetings taking place in Toronto,” said Const. Lindsey Houghton in a statement released Saturday afternoon.

The statement indicated that the smaller group of protesters were dressed all in black and were masking their faces.

Houghton said some of them tried to damage police equipment, and taunted and kicked police officers who were facilitating the protest.

The demonstration started just after noon at Commercial Drive and Napier Street and travelled along East Hastings Street to Clark Drive, towards the entrance of Port Metro Vancouver at Franklin Street, and returned to Grandview Park at about 3 p.m.

I think these [insert derogatory term] actually do a disservice to democratic rights - in the sense that any authoritarian regime that MIGHT consider democracy in the future (China) will always use these incidences to prevent any progress in the name of stability of society. If we can put these yahoos away and show authoritarian regimes what a peaceful protest might look like, they will always be scared by this ugly side of a democratic society.
