And it shouldn't be an issue after expansion occurs in a few seasons.
Because all teams should have an equal opportunity to make the post-season. And expansion shouldn't occur any time soon. If conferences like this make more sense then, then look at it when the time comes, not now. Nashville to the SE, Winnipeg to the Central. That's all that needs to happen right now.

They will. Wild card spots.

What's far more interesting about this alignment is how confident the NHL seems when it comes to where the Coyotes will be next season (at least in terms of coarse geography). The NHLPA has already raised this as a concern, no word on official response yet.

Even then, 8/14 teams from the West get in, and 8/16 from the East.

If the playoff teams were decided by a random draw from a hat then it would be a concern. The best teams will make the playoffs regardless and there will still be inequalities in any system. The Flames would have made the playoffs in 2 recent seasons if they were in the Eastern Conference.

As far as expansion goes, based on this new realignment plan I would bet that Seattle and either KC or Houston are the targeted cities. I think Phoenix probably stays put and if QC gets a team it would be one of the Florida ones.

Not surprised in the least. The Leafs should tank and try to pickup some quality picks.

Hahaha... good job TSN on the headline.

EDIT: We still haven't lost in regulation since the beating vs the Leafs (7-0-2 in our last 9 games).

Leafs fans might also want to save this

Oh no, the leafs will finish just low enough to be out of the playoffs, and high enough to not get a top 5 pick. if they do it will be traded away in some "blockbuster" deal.

They got completely dominated by the canadiens tonight, and the worst part was pacorietty getting two goals, can't stand that guy.

Well, realistically only a year ago most leafs fans were expecting a long 5-10 year rebuild from the bottom up. Enjoyed it while it lasted.

I predict the habs are only being set up to get pummeled by chara and the mighty bruins. they dont have the depth to be a cup contender.

This.

While I don't deny Montreal is looking great (and I say that as a Bruins fan) I find it hard to put much faith in standings right now when there is such a gap in games played. Unless you really think Boston is going to lose 3 out of their next 4, they are kind of in the number one spot right now. EDIT: Gah my math is poor, but you know what I mean.

But yeah, Montreal is looking great. Certainly a far cry from last season.

I find the scheduling this year to be very poor though, a difference of four games is very strange.

Always love seeing the Habs beat the Leafs

And the Jets, 4-1 on road....now at home. Flipside of last year though been playing poor at home.

FLAMES SIGN AVS' O'REILLY TO TWO-YEAR, $10M OFFER-SHEET

The Calgary Flames have filed an offer-sheet on Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan O'Reilly according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

Dreger reports that the offer sheet carries an average annual value of $5 million. O'Reilly will make $1 million in base salary for 2012-13 with a signing bonus worth $2.5 million. His 2013-14 salary will be $6.5 million.

Colorado has seven days to match the offer or accept compensation from the Flames. Should the Avalanche choose not to match the offer-sheet they would receive Calgary's first- and third-round choices at the 2013 NHL Draft.

With a second-year salary of $6.5 million, Calgary or Colorado would have to offer O'Reilly's at least that much as his next qualifying offer. If Colorado decides to match the Flames' offer he can not be traded within one calendar year of that date.

The 22-year-old forward scored 18 goals and 37 assists in 81 games.

Originally drafted in the second round (33rd overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In 236 career games with the Avalanche over three seasons, O'Reilly has scored 39 goals and 68 assists for 107 points.

The 2011-12 season was O'Reilly's final year on the three-year entry-level deal he signed with Colorado prior to the 2009-10 season.

Weird move by the Flames.

I wonder if this is in anticipation of trading a forward or two at the deadline?

The Flames just do not want to build a team through the draft. This seems like a very risky move to me. This is really strange since the Flames and Avalanche are playing tonight...

I don't know, he's only 22 and probably better than who would be drafted in the first round. Apparently he's quite the leader as well. I really like it, hopefully the Avs don't match.

If they get O'Reilly and keep him, maybe they'll have that #1 center they've always wanted... right in time for Iggy's retirement.

No kidding. But now we don't need a #1 centre for Iggy anyways as trying to set him up for 50 a season shouldn't be a priority. We've got some good young wingers that need centres too.
