I thought so, thanks! Hopefully it gets used in this project so it doesn't go to waste. That would be a huge waste. Something with airport and tourism infrastructure in Montreal.

Oddly enough I never really followed the LRT development here in Mtl. Are these two lines just proposal or are they really going ahead imminently? Where would they start from, Central Station?

Right now they're proposals, but as soon as Bill 38 will be adopted at the National Assembly, the Caisse will start working on these projects and find the best option. The good thing about it is, ADM and the AMT have already conducted feasability and ridership studies in the past years so this gives a headstart to the Caisse. My guess is these lines will be completed in 2020-2021 (start date in 2017), just like the Blue line extension.

Wow so blue line metro extension, BRT on Pie-IX, LRT to west island (including airport) and LRT to south shore, AND a new pont champlain. Sounds like a transit explosion.

I read last week Caisse will still need to make an investment decision which makes sense ... not a done deal. They will need to work out a concession arrangement.

Of course. They won't be investing in something that isn't profitable. But the expected ridership for both the targeted lines is pretty high (120,000 daily and upwards) so I'm not worried. If the CDPQ signed an arrangement with the government it's because they plan on investing in public transit.

Well, the 120,000 a day, the question is how much the province / various cities are willing to pay for each of them on top of the farebox revenue? And what about people with monthly passes.

Well, regardless of the additional cost above the farebox, the additional savings in congestion and mobility for business will make up for that much more I would say.

First track was laid on the Confederation Line today, in the trainyard. Big photo-op event with all kinds of politicians.

(Source: Marie-France Lalonde, MPP)

Work on the surface portions of the actual line itself is about to begin; crews will begin constructing the eastern third of the line at the end of this month (to date, all work has been underground or in the train yard). The Transitway segment out there will close on June 28th for the work.

Bill 38 was adopted at the National Assembly yesterday.

Now the Caisse starts working on these LRT projects.

Those non-stop delays for the opening of that little Edmonton LRT spur are ridiculous.

That Ottawa tunnel shot is great and it seems to be progressing way faster than the Spadina Subway ext which will eventually clock in at nearly 1 year of construction per km built.

spadina was a 9km tunnel, ottawa less than 3km.. Spadina was tunnel bored, Ottawa excavated, spadina dug through dirt, ottawa dug through bedrock, etc.

Ottawa's downtown tunnel is rather unusual because it's a shallow bored tunnel built through extremely tunnel-friendly geology--shallow, soft bedrock that roadheaders can chew through like butter. It allows the tunnel to be entirely bored, even the stations, despite its shallowness (in most places, the roof of the tunnel is directly beneath the utility levels).

For these reason, it's a much cheaper, easier, and less disruptive tunnel project to construct than pretty much any other tunnel ever built in Canada.

That said, Spadina was a poorly managed project; hence why the TTC has now brought in a P3 firm to handle it.

The Ottawa tunnel can't be that shallow if it's going underneath the Rideau Canal.

The Canal isn't very deep though - around Downtown, it's all of 4-5m deep, not excatly the Marianas trench

This may help with the visualization

The Green line represents the depth of the tunnel relative to the depth in the original plan (grey line)

Details in this story from CBC Ottawa:

Quote:
The tunnel for Ottawa's $2.1-billion light rail transit project will now go under Queen Street instead of Albert Street as part of modifications designed to keep the project under budget.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said the move to Queen Street will allow the tunnel to be built at a depth of 15 to 16 metres instead of 39 to 40 metres. The LRT station at the Rideau Canal also rises from 38 metres to 29 metres.

A better project to compare to Ottawa is the Metrolinx Crosstown-LRT, the Spadina subway is a vastly more complex/larger project than what's happening here. Apples to Oranges dude.
