As I said in the first thread, I'm visiting colleges around the country for around 30 days and I'm taking pictures along the way.
Unfortunately, I did not have anywhere near as much time to shoot in Chicago but I did end up doing a fairly comprehensive set on the Pullman area of South Side, a small set of Lincoln Park surrounding DePaul University and a couple pics of Gary Indiana (where my family's from) and Hammond.
The Pullman neighborhood has a very interesting history... according to a family friend in Gary, back in the 1860's a man named George Pullman created a community to house the train porters that worked on his railroad. It was unique at the time in that while the development functioned as a community, Pullman directed it; he went so far as to forbid residents from sitting on their porches to force them to congregate in Arcade Park. The community basically exists in the same form it did when it was created... Pullman spared no expense on the construction of the community and it's obvious by looking at it (and the fact that it's still standing). It's easily one of the most beautiful neighborhood I've seen in the south side.
I've always wanted to visit Pullman since I realized that's where some of the Fugitive was filmed (which is one of my favorite movies of all time for some reason).

I was looking at some of the masonry work in Pullman, isn't arched brickwork the exception (instead of a flat topped limestone pediment or something) on the front of homes in Chicago? I dare say some of the blocks (not all of the ones photographed, but some others on google earth too) have an almost hybridized St. Louis/Chicago flavor, even down to some of the tuckpointing and chain link fences. The cracked concrete stairs/stoop and handrail looks very St. Louis, too...interesting.
Likewise there are Chicago looking townhouses here scattered around, too.

Nice pictures. Interesting that there's a church made of serpentine in the Pullman District. Serpentine is big in this area, most notably in the West Chester PA area. Serpentine had been shipped out to other places in the region, as far as Baltimore and Cambridge MD that I know of, but I didn't think I'd ever see a serpentine building way out there.
