Yep, this one hurts. Beautiful building and a great spot in the skyline. Ouch.

^ Yep. Plenty of better designs and better developments for people to go to. And, we don't have to trade a great building for a decent one.

No disappointment or surprise here.

..we are very lucky that one of the buildings already under construction hasn't been scrapped......Las Vegas and Miami have both had buildings simply stopped part of the way up !

It seems to me that Related has really floundered, outside of South Florida, and they've gone into hiding down there now.

The tower could have been really good if the right materials were used. I thought it was just a really refreshing design given the area.

I agree. I think the design made a lot of friends due to:

1) Appearance that they might use a high-quality facade on a residential building, which we have seen far too rarely.

2) Contrast with the junk in River North.

3) Height.

4) Somewhat unusual form.

That's certainly what made me like the design. However, I never really thought it was particularly innovative or exciting. The loss of the hole really made it drop in interest to me, and the pesky balconies ensured that it would never have the elegance of Trump Tower's curved facade.

DAMN! This was a great project. What worries me is that we will see a shity replacement project when the market comes back, or with a switch in programing. A typical hotel would perform well here, given its a 1/2 block from Michigan and not far from the River North toursit trap stuff.

So, with Park Michigan this is two great buildings from the boom now dead, I suspect Mandarin will be third. Why cant crap like the Ritz Residences be weeded out and cancelled before we loose the good stuff? Go figure.

I'll count myself lucky if Chicago avoids that fate. At this point, a canceled proposal isn't too bad: tough times are coming. You just gotta hope that they come back when the market recovers.

That said, I'll be heartbroken if River Pointe is canceled!

Coincidentally, I just drove past their HQ in Coral Gables on Thursday.

I didn't know it was the same "Related Companies" at the time, but I wondered if they were connected with the Related that was an active Chicago developer. Now I know, fwiw.

Actually the park michigan was not even ever approved or marketed so I would not even count that building at all...The mandarin differers from canyon ranch in that they have much more units sold than canyon ranch ever did.

too bad. i really liked this one, but i'm not surprised to see it go. things are tightening in the market, only the best of the best or the cheapest of the cheapest are going to survive, and unfortunately for this project, it didn't fall into either category.

on the bright side. at least the modest little modern building currently on site wasn't senselessly ripped down to leave us with yet another surface parking lot.

as this is now a dead proposal, i've appropriately moved this thread to the buildings & architecture forum, from where it will eventually be moved to the thread archive after the necessary period of mourning.

A real shame this one didn't make it, it would have looked great in the skyline.

And also a shame because it seems most booms have a structure of cheap-great-cheap. When this site gets developed in the next round, the odds are far greater that the proposal will be a cheap-ass Grand Plaza type from a developer just looking to cash in.

Well, everyone who was bemoaning the loss of the plaza gets a few more years to enjoy it.
