Great update. Does it look like the other crane will be going up this weekend as well?

How depressing and bland does the Long Center look?!? And it's "new." Man, what could have been...

Since financing was ultimately the reason it was downsized, I wonder if it would be possible to expand the building with the original plan they had with an additional space? I actually don't mind it now, but yeah, I preferred the original plan.

Anyway, it was freaking beautiful outside today. We went and saw the car show at the convention center and then we down to the boardwalk for a bit.

I was too because I had the misfortune of living in Minnesota (God, I hate -30F weather) during that time. So I Googled "Austin Long Center Proposals":

Crane is up!

I thought I did it right this time, but it still just shows up as a link. Anyway, check it out. I took photos of the UT System Headquarters and the 3rd and Colorado entrance today too.

It was going to be called the Samsung / Long Performing Art Center of Austin, or SLPACOA.

I think you used the link in the location bar. You need the image URL link. There must be a link somewhere on instagram with a photo url related to that photo. You did the forum tags correctly, though.

I clicked on his link, saw the photo, right clicked on it, and there was no "view image" but there was a "view background image" so I clicked on that & got a jpg file

I don't have an instagram account so I'm not sure, but when you're logged in to your's there should be something that lets you grab the photo's url.

Thanks! And Kevin, there is that capability and that's what I did so I feel like it should have worked, but I'll see if I can grab the link to a jpg file next time.

9' deep slab? Really, Is that a replacement for drilling the round pilings deep into the ground, as I did not see they did that. Does someone have an expertise or idea about this type of foundation?

It's called a mat foundation. Basically the gist that I got was that it creates a very heavy slab that distributes the weight evenly over a large area. It seems to be something that is favored in areas where water is present. I remember they also used a mat foundation for the new library.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-Grad...xpansive_Soils
Quote:
An on-grade mat foundation is an above-ground type of foundation used to provide load-bearing capacity in expansive, rocky or hydro collapsible soils. The foundation is created by connecting a series of thermal-grade heat resistant plastic forms or Insulated Concrete Forms ICF's often made from Expanded or extruded polystyrene, set directly on grade, and then monolithically pouring a post tension, rebar or Fiber reinforced concrete slab (usually 4” – 8”). No footings are required. The monolithic pour creates concrete beams running throughout the footprint and perimeter in one operation. The completed slab then sits on the ground like a raft, the void areas underneath the slab, or the low pressure areas formed by the placement of the forms allowing for expansive soil movement.

The on-grade mat foundation possesses great stiffness, with strength to resist differential swelling resulting from landscaping practices, surface drainage, or flooding from any source. It does not require presoaking underlying soil pads, and there is no need for footings, meaning no earth spoils. And, since the slab section is typically 13” – 14” above grade, it requires little or no gravel, sand or moisture barrier.

Yup. You let the geotech engineers figure this out for you, and you be sure they're well paid too
