ALBANIA - a hidden gem

Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, but was conquered by Italy in 1939 and occupied by Germany in 1943. Communist partisans took over the country in 1944. Albania allied itself first with the USSR (until 1960), and then with China (to 1978). In the early 1990s, Albania ended 46 years of isolated communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven challenging as successive governments have tried to deal with high unemployment, widespread corruption, dilapidated infrastructure, powerful organized crime networks, and combative political opponents.

Albania has made progress in its democratic development since it first held multiparty elections in 1991, but deficiencies remain. Most of Albania's post-communist elections were marred by claims of electoral fraud; however, international observers judged elections to be largely free and fair since the restoration of political stability following the collapse of pyramid schemes in 1997. Albania joined NATO in April 2009 and in June 2014 became an EU candidate. Albania in April 2017 received a European Commission recommendation to open EU accession negotiations following the passage of historic EU-mandated justice reforms in 2016. Although Albania's economy continues to grow, it has slowed, and the country is still one of the poorest in Europe. A large informal economy and a weak energy and transportation infrastructure remain obstacles. [CIA]

Great tour of a place we rarely see on here. My brother in law was born and raised in Tirana, and that’s definitely sparked my interest in Albania. I’d love to go out there sometime.

Great thread!

I lived for a bit in northern Albania, near Kosovo, while working on a mapping project, and got to travel the country pretty extensively.

What a place. It definitely has it's own thing going on, and the hospitality was amazing. Tirana is a mix of tacky and artsy (in a good way), Durres was a dingy port city, and Valbona Valley was as beautiful as anywhere I've been.

It looks like development is hitting the coast though, which is unfortunate, since it had that old-school untouched adriatic vibe going for a long while...

Nice pictures, Albania is underrepresented in this forum. Funny signs.

#24 is my fav! Ancient PC motherboards. I guess these are worthy of a specialized museum.

Awesome and very contemporary idea to decorate and embellish one's shop entrance.

I don't think I've ever seen this anywhere. People in there are super cool for this idea.

Albania...Land of Enver

Great photo thread. I think Enver would be turning in his grave if he saw the sweeping changes that have occurred.

What is that in photo 44. Is that a beach community. Bizarre ?

Good bump. I missed this one and it's a great one.

Very cool to see Roman ruins mixed in with the modern world.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys!

@Proof Sheet: It's a construction area of an hotel complex. I'm sure Tourism will grow fast in next years there.
@xzmattzx: It looks like a capitol building but it is the university of Berat.
