I think your categories are somewhat dated. I would suggest a new category for North Central Austin. There is so much going on in the areas north of campus and up to 183, and these developments and changing neighborhoods are pretty well integrated by road, transit, and customary usage with what you refer to as Central Austin. With regards to South Austin, it seems to me that there is kind of an "Old South Austin" which is the area between downtown and Ben White (or maybe William Cannon?), and there is the newer South Austin which fans out beyond Ben White.

New residential neighborhoods, apartments and shopping centers are popping up rapidly all the way down Parmer to Manor, TX and 290 east as well.

Oh, I don't doubt they're dated. I just never went north of UT, so that was all "North Austin" to me growing up. Old habits die hard.

And yes, there are different South Austins, and I think your delineation of Ben White is right. Obviously, Travis Heights & Bouldin are two of the oldest neighborhoods, dating back to the 1800s. Then there's the area just south of Ben White around Joslin Elementary & Crockett HS, which dates to post WWII. Then there's the "new" South Austin stretching down to FM 1626.

My parents and their families lived on just two streets in South Austin. My parents were next door neighbors as a matter of fact. They all went to Crockett HS and they remember before Crockett was built when the neighborhood was the last residential outpost in South Austin back when Stassney Lane was only a two lane road. They rode their bikes to Barton Springs and would take South First long before the Williamson Creek bridges were built. They said the street dipped way down to the creek and when it rained a lot the street simply flooded at every crossing. When this neighborhood was built around 1960 it was actually outside of the city limits, but it was annexed within a decade as the City started planning. Crockett came along in 1968 and the local branch of the library opened in 1974. I'm sure people back then in the neighborhoods north of here probably had a hard time thinking of this area as South Austin being that it was fairly rural for some time before the end of the 70s. To me, it's very much "South Austin" both geographically and culturally.

Yes, North Austin past 183 probably becomes three different areas fanning from far to the west/northwest and far to the east/northeast. I am not sure what to call these areas since they spill into other municipalities. That is why I make the case for the area inside of 183 and north of campus to be known as North Central Austin.

I live down in SW Austin near William Cannon/Mopac off Convict Hill Road. I always think of it as SW Austin and tell people I live "down in Southwest". Sometimes I mention Oak Hill. They seem to know what I mean. I don't feel like I am in "South Austin" until I get over into the neighborhoods near Central Market or along South First or Manchaca in the neighborhoods built in the 60s. I guess Ben White is a bit arbitrary, but it is fairly accurate as a boundary. Stassney might be better since it was the edge of town until recent decades.

This is really cool. Two acres of the former mall parking lot are going to be turned into a park. A total of 1,000 trees are being planted as part of the mall redevelopment.

I'm having difficulty figuring out exactly which former parking lot will become the parkland. It mentions the southern edge of the campus, but on the original plans it seems to me that there is a lot designated for parkland on the eastern side of the mall....maybe I'm missing something?
