Which city next to 1 million

So which Canadian city will be next to cross the 1 million mark - Ottawa or Edmonton?

Plenty of factors at play here, possible annexations/amalgamations, differing economies and they are virtually neck and neck right now with Ottawa at 934,243 and Edmonton at 932,546 per the 2016 Census results.

Be mindful of the terminology being used - yeah, I know it'll get some people's britches all knotted up but it is a poll and thread that I started. I am well aware of the city versus CMA versus urban area versus what have you delineations and how some have strong feelings/opinions one way or another.

As such, please don't bother with the age old arguments as we all know that any 'city' will use that magical 1 million mark in their marketing and self promotion - it is kind of a big deal.

Poll is anonymous and you only get one kick at the cat in the poll.

Both will be very close together crossing that unless oil goes up or down another $10.

I'm biased, but with our growth rate and potential upcoming annexations I think it'll be Edmonton. Alberta still seems to be one of the fastest growing provinces, after all.

Edmonton's proposed Leduc County annexation - Edmonton International Airport is a contentious issue by the looks of things - link.

Ottawa reaching the 1 Million mark on Friday. Metropolitan area should be between 1.4 and 1.5 million.

Ottawa will for sure be the next municipality to reach 1 million. Edmonton's municipal census numbers will be released within the next month, but I'd imagine the COE will still be about 50 000 from the mark at this time.

Edit: Oh woops, I see this thread is years old and was just updating with the Ottawa numbers today. Either way, yeah.

We'll know within the next month or so. Like I said above, I'd estimate around 950 000. Could be as high as 975 000 though. They're getting really close. After these two, it will be a long time until we see another municipality pass 1 million. Mississauga's growth rate has nearly stalled, and even though Winnipeg's has picked up, it'll take a long time to get those extra 300 000 people under any circumstance.

The next major milestones we'll see after Edmonton passes 1 million will likely be, in order, the City of Toronto passing 3 million (currently 2.9ish), the City of Calgary passing 1.5 million (currently 1.3), and the City of Montreal passing 2 million (currently just over 1.7). Though the MTL and CGY milestones could be a pretty close call.

They say it’s 2035 for Winnipeg to have 1 million people

From what I have read Winnipeg has a CMA around 825k currently

Someone's been out of the loop when it comes to SSP Canada "culture".

Some of the Ottawa media fumbled the ball yesterday by saying that the city would join the 1-million-club along with Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and... Vancouver.

CBC also threw in Edmonton as a city we're "joining" in the million club, listing the Metro populations of each instead of city population.

EDIT: they seem to have made the correction, clarifying that Edmonton and Vancouver proper have not reached the million mark.

It just proves how arbitrary population numbers within administrative city limits are. The notion that population numbers for the metropolitan areas is what really matters is still a foreign concept for a lot of people, including the media who usually insists on using the municipal numbers.

The municipal numbers are a meaningless distraction unless you are only considering issues related to the municipality itself such as its tax base, or services restricted to that municipality, etc.

Very true. Geographic size of cities varies considerably. If we compare Old Ottawa (pre 2001 amalgamation city limits) with Vancouver today, which are roughly the same size in square kilometers (110 vs 114), Vancouver has nearly double the population with roughly 650,000 vs Ottawa's 350,000, which is more in line with the metropolitan difference as well. Montreal, and maybe Calgary, are the only cities that have reached a million without major help from amalgamations. Toronto I believe was around 700,000 before the 2001 fusion, again with a geographic size similar to Vancouver today and Ottawa at the time.

I agree that the metro population is the most important, though in the case of Ottawa the city proper population figure gives a pretty good idea too as I believe around 90-95% of the metro population on the Ontario side is within Ottawa city limits.
