^Interesting idea.

According to the article, patrons pay a $5 cover charge and stay as long as they like.

I'm trying to remember the last time I played a board game. I'm not suggesting they aren't a good time but seriously, I couldn't tell you when or what it was.

I wish them well; a new concept is a tricky thing, however.

There's a place with a similar idea in Toronto, called Snakes & Lattes. It's constantly packed.

Now that being said, it's in a bit of a trendier neighbourhood, a bit denser population, etc if I'm remembering correctly. I'll probably stop in to check it out, get in a game or two.

^Let us know how it goes.

They didn't give an address but they said King E so maybe International Village.

Snakes and Lattes looks pretty cool. http://www.snakesandlattes.com/

Gameopolis will be opening at 223 King East, next to what was once Silver Snail Hamilton.

There used to be a Silver Snail in Hamilton? Neat. I really like Big B, but I wish I didn't have to go up the mountain or to Dundas for my nerdy needs.

Once that $5 fee covers the price of all the games they bought, they will be making $5 in profit every time a group comes in to play some games. While people are playing games, they can't leave, so they have to stay to buy the food and drinks there. It is kind of genius really, people pay to trap themselves at the café and then they have to pay for more food and drinks because they can't leave in the middle of a game. The tournaments should bring in a lot of people and they could charge a higher fee to be a part of it. I myself, being a child of the 90s, would gladly pay a fee to be in a Hungry, Hungry Hippo tournament, lol

You're right! A game addiction leads to "entrapment" = spend $. Love it

I didn't mean that people will get addicted so they won't leave. I meant that if they are an hour into playing a game they aren't going to leave to go home and eat. They'll stay, finish the game, and buy some more food and drinks because they have no other choice other than leaving in the middle of a game to go home and eat which will waste their $5 fee they paid.

I know what you meant, and I wasn't being literal about addiction! But what a good business model, given the passion for board games. Wonder how long it will take before there is the hard core of regulars and "their" tables?

That Silver Snail went under in the late 1980s/early 1990s, I believe. Was great while it lasted. Here's another layer to the neighbourhood's comic book cred.

Westdale has Comic Connection or Conspiracy Comics, and the east has Burdin's.

Korean. Opening today, I believe.

Don't recall this being mentioned here

McCartney and Son, 282 James Street North

Quote:
Come on down for some really great salad, soup and delicious deli meats. Hope to see you soon! Check out our blog section for info on the art we've got hanging. We also cater to offices, parties, film & TV sets, as well as private parties in the restaurant.

Hamilton’s rock ‘n’ roll chef - Shane McCartney used to cater to the stars, now he’s working his culinary magic on James North.

Shane McCartney has learned a lot about rock musicians over the years, at first by promoting their shows and then, more recently, by cooking for them. Perhaps the most important thing he learned is that they all love comfort food.

I had McCartney and Son back during my last trip to Hamilton in February. I had a sandwich and soup and both were delicious and well priced. I definitely suggest it.

There's almost too much happening on James North to keep up with.

They've moved into the former Atlantic Fish location beside The Wild Orchid.

Local food supply

With the growth of restaurants in Jackson Sq. this could be an added bonus to the Farmers Market. Not to mention the grocery store.
Hopefully they feed (pun intended) off each other. Works has a local policy already.
This is great news for the downtown. Thanks to all the parties involved.
