I LOVE elevated structures too.

North of Selkirk, Manitoba, there's this random bridge that's just MASSIVELY out of proportion to the surrounding area/need. It's ALMOST enough to cross from Halifax to Dartmouth, and it's just this bridge over a river in the middle of nowhere. But it's HUGE AND COOL. And you get up on it, stop, take a few pictures... gorgeous.

I will have to check that out on google earth, haha.

For anyone who enjoys layered urban areas / elevated structures there is no where better than Japan. Elevated freeways crossing over top of elevated metro lines with elevated Bullet trains above them! haha.

^Shanghai is getting the multilayered awesomeness as well. One of my favorite sights when visiting Tokyo (as well as Shanghai and to a lesser extent, Seoul).

Ah, Howard Pawley's bridge to nowhere. It is part of Selkirk's ring road. It does have a nice view. I once came to a complete stop and enjoyed the view for about one minute. Until a car came up from behind me.

Wow can't believe this thread has been dead for so long!

Well let's take a look at everyone's favorite beautiful beast, the new Port Mann Bridge!

Although there are only 3 eastbound lanes at the moment, the barriers have been specifically placed to leave room for the HOV lane, so all they have to do is paint a few stripes and POOF, they've got 4 lanes on the eastbound side.

There's no doubting that they will open all the westbound lanes ahead of schedule, even by a few months. I wouldn't be surprised if all 8 lanes opened by October. That'd mean tolling would commence 3 months sooner. However I'm sure the people stuck in gridlock at the 152 merge everyday would appreciate the doubled traffic capacity enough to shell out the $1.50.

That's a fairly impressive bridge, all right - and it totally dwarfs the old Port Mann! What's the main span length for the new Port Mann?

470 meters, which is the second longest cable-stayed span in the western hemisphere. Also it is now the widest long-span bridge on Earth at 65 meters wide, the Sydney harbour bridge was the previous record holder at 49 meters.

Would you climb on top of Port Mann Bridge to protest?

Are you speaking to me? ... if yes, I don't care if they keep the old one, I was just curious.

I just have in mind the example of the Champlain bridge : when the new one will be built, the old one will be destroyed.

If you look at the 1st pic you can see that there's a section of the new bridge that can't be completed until the approach of the old bridge is demolished.

Here is a really cool pic of the New Port Mann.

She really is a beautiful bridge (for those who love bridges, hehe).

Saw it on facebook so this is what I have for a source:

Is the steel arch structure going to be dismantled when the cable span is done?

That is the plan. Not all of the new lanes are open on the new bridge yet because the approaches for the new bridge cannot be completed until the old one is removed.

I understand it has to go because of the logistics of the site but I think its a bit of a shame. While it doesn't compare to the new bridge, which is absolutely spectacular, the old one wasn't too shabby either(appearance wise, structurally its probably a different story). It has somewhat of a historical appeal to it since long span arch bridges have basically gone the way of the dinosaur.
