56 Leonard appears to be a major aesthetic disappointment, at least from a distance

Thus far, I'm disappointed in how 56 Leonard is turning out. From a distance, I'm having trouble seeing any sort of "staggering floors" effect. Instead I just see balconies in various positions. The placement of the balconies isn't particularly 'rhythmic' either. I wouldn't say it looks bad, but it doesn't look nearly as distinctive as I imagined it would look from the renderings.

^^^ I agree. I thought it was going to be less ordinary than it is. I would like to have seen the entire building look like the first few floors. Still a nice building but I was expecting something different

Balcony architecture falls apart when viewed from afar - it end up just looking like a rectangular box (because it is, essentially). The real magic is looking up at the tower from below, or being on one of the terraces. For better or worse.

The top should be the most "Jenga" like portion. Probably will appear so when viewed from a far. I think...

But up close, its stunning.

i just walked by this bldg today and i dont see how anyone can put any kind of final judgement on it yet. i dont see anything different with the rather plain middle section that we didnt expect. its u/c and the top section is shrowded. we have to wait. we'll see soon enough if it was value-engineered or whatever away from the coolness of the renders.

Agreed, though I think the blueness of the actual glass is a disappointment (cheap looking) compared to the sophisticated white/gray hues shown in the rendering.

Yeah it does look that way. You'd almost think that there isn't a boom going on. In time due, and by time, I am referring to 2017, it will be very noticeable. Given the size, its difficult to get those crane shots like we see in Miami because the city is booming in so many neighborhoods that you'd need a 1000 gigapixel shot from the Space Station to capture it all. But yeah it can be hard to catch the nearly 20% increase in skyscraper stock by 2020 and the addition of 500 + highrises and over a 900 midrises u/c right now.

Biggest boom since the 20's!

2020 will be epic. So many changes and it will be a much busier city. NYC is expected to pass 60 million visitors. If it where a country, I'd be the 3rd most visited place.

I suspect the price of the condos in there are running insane because of that. First, the design of the tower is notably elegant and original IMHO (and some wealthy will find the same); second, the views over the city from up there will be 'imprenables' as they say over here, which is in fact something wrong. More nimbyism might come up from this spoiled.

That's why the more random and taller towers around Central Park seem more harmless in that respect, somehow. Their designs are not that special, and they're drowned in the Midtown fabric already, anyway.
